Ocelotes UNACH is a professional basketball team based in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico, representing the Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH). Founded in 2005, the team has become a competitive force in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP), known for its energetic style and commitment to developing local talent.

Team Overview and Identity

The Ocelotes, named after the ocelot wildcat native to the region, were established as part of UNACH's push to promote sports and provide opportunities for young athletes. The team's colors are green and white, reflecting the university's identity. They play their home games at the Gimnasio Universitario, a 3,500-seat arena on the UNACH campus that provides an intimate and electric atmosphere for fans. The Ocelotes have built a strong following among students and local basketball enthusiasts.

History and Achievements

Ocelotes UNACH joined the LNBP in 2007 and quickly became a competitive fixture. The team's best seasons came in 2015 and 2018, when they reached the league semifinals, falling just short of the championship series. In 2016, they won the Copa Independencia, a mid-season tournament, marking their first major trophy. The Ocelotes have also been consistent playoff participants, qualifying for the postseason in eight of the last twelve seasons. Their development pipeline has produced several players who have gone on to represent Mexico at the international level.

Playing Style and Philosophy

Under head coach Juan Manuel García, who has led the team since 2019, the Ocelotes employ an up-tempo offense that emphasizes three-point shooting and transition baskets. Defensively, they rely on aggressive perimeter pressure and active hands to create turnovers. This style has made them a tough opponent, especially at home, where their energetic fanbase—largely composed of university students—fuels the team's intensity. The coaching staff prioritizes player development, often giving significant minutes to young prospects.

Key Players and Roster

The roster features a mix of veteran leadership and emerging Mexican talent. Point guard Luis Hernández, a Tuxtla Gutiérrez native, is the team's floor general and a fan favorite, known for his court vision and clutch shooting. Forward Carlos Ramírez provides scoring punch from the wing, while center Miguel Ángel Torres anchors the paint with his rebounding and shot-blocking. In recent seasons, the Ocelotes have also benefited from the contributions of import players, such as American guard Marcus Johnson, who led the team in scoring in 2022.

Rivalries and Community Impact

Ocelotes UNACH shares a fierce rivalry with the Soles de Oaxaca, another southern Mexican team. Matches between the two are always heated and draw significant attention. Beyond the court, the Ocelotes are deeply involved in community outreach, running basketball clinics for local youth and promoting education through sport. The team's partnership with UNACH allows players to pursue academic degrees while competing professionally, a unique aspect of the organization.

Recent Season and Future Outlook

In the 2023 LNBP season, the Ocelotes finished with a 20-12 record, good for fifth place in the regular season. They advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual champions, the Fuerza Regia de Monterrey. With a strong core returning and a commitment to developing homegrown talent, Ocelotes UNACH are poised to remain a playoff contender and challenge for their first LNBP title in the coming years.
