Ocelotes UNACH protected their home court with an 87-82 victory over Guaycuras de la Paz in Mexico CIBACOPA action on September 27, 2026. The win was a gritty, defensive-minded effort that saw Ocelotes overcome a slow start and a late Guaycuras rally to secure a five-point decision.

Ocelotes Overcome Early Deficit

Guaycuras de la Paz came out firing, hitting their first four attempts from the field and building an early 14-6 lead. Ocelotes UNACH looked unsettled against Guaycuras' aggressive perimeter pressure, committing five turnovers in the first six minutes. But the home side settled down behind a pair of three-pointers from their shooting guard and a strong offensive rebounding effort from their power forward.

By the end of the first quarter, Ocelotes had trimmed the deficit to 22-20. The second quarter belonged to the home team, as they held Guaycuras to just 15 points and took a 44-37 lead into halftime. The defensive intensity in that period — especially on the perimeter — set the tone for the rest of the game.

Key Moments and Turning Points

• Second-quarter lockdown: Ocelotes held Guaycuras scoreless for a four-minute stretch, turning a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead.
• Third-quarter response: After Guaycuras cut the lead to three, Ocelotes answered with a 9-1 run powered by back-to-back steals and fast-break layups.
• Late-game free throws: Ocelotes converted 11 of 14 free throws in the final five minutes to hold off the Guaycuras comeback attempt.

Tactical Story: Defense Wins in the Half Court

Ocelotes UNACH won this game with defense. They limited Guaycuras de la Paz to 38% shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers, which they converted into 19 points. Their help defense was particularly effective, collapsing on drives and forcing Guaycuras into difficult kick-out passes that led to contested threes.

Guaycuras stayed in the game thanks to their offensive rebounding and a hot shooting night from their small forward, who finished with 23 points. But they struggled to generate clean looks in the final three minutes, settling for long jumpers instead of attacking the rim. Ocelotes, meanwhile, executed their half-court offense patiently, using ball screens to create mismatches inside.

Standout Performers

Ocelotes' point guard was the engine of the offense, finishing with 19 points and 8 assists while committing only two turnovers. Their center added 16 points and 11 rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends. The bench provided a crucial spark, outscoring the Guaycuras reserves 28-14.

For Guaycuras de la Paz, the small forward's 23-point performance was the highlight, and their point guard added 14 points and 6 assists. However, the team's 17 turnovers and 6-of-24 shooting from three-point range proved costly in a game decided by single digits.

Season Impact and What’s Next

The victory improves Ocelotes UNACH's standing in the CIBACOPA table and reinforces their reputation as a tough home team. For Guaycuras de la Paz, the loss is a frustrating one — they competed for 40 minutes but couldn't execute when it mattered most.

Ocelotes will look to carry their defensive intensity into their next matchup, while Guaycuras will focus on reducing turnovers and improving their late-game shot selection. The final score — Ocelotes UNACH 87, Guaycuras de la Paz 82 — tells the story of a hard-fought contest decided by defense, rebounding, and free-throw execution down the stretch.
