Ildefonso fuels fast start as Weavers stretch winning streak to 14

The Abra Solid North Weavers did not waste time reminding the league why they remain the team to beat.

Fueled by a blistering opening quarter from Dave Ildefonso, the Weavers jumped on the Mindoro Tamaraws early and cruised to a 97-81 victory on Thursday at Paco Arena in Manila, extending their winning streak to 14 games in the 2026 MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) season.

Ildefonso outscored Mindoro by himself in the opening period, helping Abra build a commanding 26-8 advantage that set the tone for the rest of the night.

The Tamaraws made several attempts to fight back, but the Weavers answered every challenge to secure their 16th win in 17 games and maintain their position atop the 27-team, two-division tournament.

Abra remained ahead of the San Juan Knights (14-1) and Caloocan Batang Kankaloo in the battle for the North Division’s top playoff spots.

Leading the charge once again was Ildefonso, who delivered 21 points highlighted by five three-pointers, along with three rebounds. The reigning MPBL Most Valuable Player earned his second straight Best Player of the Game award as he continues to regain his rhythm after recovering from an early-season injury.

"I try to study our plays, our system, and try my best to get my opportunities," said Ildefonso. "As a team, we're out to defend our crown and, hopefully, everybody stays healthy."

His brother Shaun provided valuable support with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while DJ Fenner and Jake Figueroa also made key contributions with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

Figueroa added seven assists and five rebounds, while Fenner finished with three assists and two rebounds.

Abra coach Yong Garcia went deeper into his bench in a different way, using only 11 players instead of the usual 15-man rotation. Still, every Weavers player who saw action managed to score, showing the team’s overall depth.

Mike Ayonayon and Raven Gonzales added nine points each.

Mindoro, now 8-9, tried to keep pace behind a 14-point effort from its top scorer, who connected on four three-pointers while adding four rebounds and four assists. JC Recto also scored 14 points with six rebounds and two assists, while Aaron Jeruta contributed 10 points, five assists, and three rebounds.

The Weavers’ latest victory continued a remarkable stretch that has placed them firmly at the top of the MPBL standings — and with every win, Abra moves closer to defending its championship crown.
