Gilas forward Mike Phillips embarks on Japan journey with Kyoto Hannaryz

Mike Phillips is headed to Japan for the next chapter of his basketball career after signing with the Kyoto Hannaryz for the 2026-27 B.League season.

The Filipino-American forward was officially unveiled by the club on Tuesday, becoming the latest homegrown talent to earn an opportunity in Japan through the B.League's Asian Quota system.

"I’m truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to join the Kyoto Hannaryz organization and the B.LEAGUE," Phillips said.

The move comes just months after Phillips became eligible to play as an Asian Quota import following his debut with Gilas Pilipinas in Window 3 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers. Earlier this year, FIBA granted him local player status for the Philippines, allowing him to represent the national team.

Although he played only two games for Gilas, Phillips immediately showcased his value by averaging 4.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while bringing trademark hustle, defense, and relentless energy.

Before making the leap overseas, Phillips built an impressive résumé at De La Salle University, where he helped the Green Archers capture two UAAP championships. He closed out his collegiate career with averages of 12.58 points, 14.58 rebounds, 2.68 assists, and 1.32 steals per game, earning Finals MVP honors in the process.

Japan is also familiar territory for Phillips. During his collegiate years, La Salle competed in the World University Basketball Series, giving him an early taste of the country's basketball culture.

"During my college years, I had the chance to play in several tournaments in Japan, and those experiences left a strong impression on me. I’m excited to return and experience the passion of basketball in Japan once again," he said.

Phillips launched his professional career with the San Juan Knights in the MPBL, where he averaged 8.4 points and 10.7 rebounds before attracting interest from overseas.

His brother, Ben Phillips, expressed the family's appreciation to everyone who played a role in Mike's development, particularly De La Salle University, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, and the San Juan Knights.

He also described the move as an important milestone that would help Mike continue to grow while preparing him for future opportunities with Gilas Pilipinas and a possible return to Philippine professional basketball.

Excited for the challenge ahead, Phillips vowed to give his best for the Hannaryz and their supporters.

"I’m looking forward to giving my all every day alongside my teammates and competing hard for the Kyoto fans and community throughout the season," he said. "Thank you very much for your support. I can’t wait to see everyone in Kyoto, and I hope we can have a great season together."

Phillips is the third Asian Quota player in Kyoto Hannaryz history after Filipino standouts Matthew Wright and Jamie Malonzo. The club hopes his arrival will bolster a team that finished 28-32 and placed 20th in last season's 26-team B.League standings.
