Filipinas, U23 squad face early Asian Games tests after challenging draws

The road to Asian Games glory will not be easy for the Philippines.

The Filipinas and the Philippine Men’s Under-23 National Team were handed difficult paths after Thursday’s group stage draw for the football competitions of the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya-Aichi, Japan.

Riding the momentum of another historic achievement after qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup — their second consecutive appearance on football’s biggest stage — the Filipinas found themselves placed in a demanding Group B.

They will face regional heavyweight China, along with Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, in their bid to reach the knockout stage.

The challenge will be highlighted by their matchup against China, the world No. 16 team in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings. The Filipinas, currently ranked No. 39, will also need to overcome No. 51 Uzbekistan and No. 81 Hong Kong to advance.

The Philippine Men’s Under-23 National Team will also have a difficult assignment after being drawn into Group C with Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Kuwait.

Entering the tournament ranked No. 135 in the FIFA rankings, the Filipinos will be the lowest-ranked side in the group. They will face Uzbekistan (No. 50), Vietnam (No. 99), and Kuwait (No. 133) as they look to make the most of their return to the Asian Games.

Despite the challenge, the U23 squad now has a valuable opportunity to test itself against some of the continent’s established football nations after earning late qualification for the competition.

The Asian Games football tournaments will take place from September 14 to October 3, with matches played across seven venues in Japan’s Chubu and Kansai regions.

Beyond the Asian Games, the Philippine senior men’s national team is also preparing for a demanding international calendar.

The squad, previously known as the Azkals, will first compete in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 as it continues its search for a long-awaited regional title. It will then turn its attention to the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, scheduled from September 21 to October 6.

The Filipinas arrive at the continental meet with confidence after another successful World Cup qualification campaign, while the U23 men’s team will look to use the Asian Games stage as a chance to gain experience against stronger opposition.

In the women’s tournament, host Japan will lead Group A against North Korea, India, and Singapore. South Korea, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei make up Group C, while Australia, Thailand, Nepal, and Chinese Taipei form Group D.

The men’s competition will feature host Japan in Group A alongside North Korea, Palestine, and Yemen. Group B is made up of South Korea, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia, while China, Iran, Indonesia, and Tajikistan will compete in Group D.

For both Philippine teams, the challenge is clear: survive a difficult group and prove they belong among Asia’s best.
