Alex Eala's road to the US Open begins with a demanding assignment as the Filipina takes on China's Zheng Qinwen in the opening round of the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

Fresh off a two-week break that included a brief trip home to the Philippines, Eala enters the tournament carrying not only hopes of a strong start to the North American hard-court season but also lingering questions about her health after withdrawing from the doubles draw, where she had been slated to reunite with tennis icon Venus Williams.

That decision has placed even greater focus on her singles debut, with the matchup against Zheng expected to reveal how prepared she is for the crucial stretch leading to the US Open.

The encounter also rekindles a rivalry from the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where Eala pushed Zheng to the limit in a gripping three-set semifinal before eventually falling, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Zheng went on to secure the gold medal, while Eala earned the bronze.

While Zheng's current world ranking has slipped to No. 123 following a lengthy recovery from elbow surgery, it hardly reflects her pedigree. The 23-year-old owns one of the strongest résumés on tour, highlighted by an Olympic gold medal in Paris, a runner-up finish at the 2024 Australian Open, and a run to the US Open quarterfinals.

Armed with a booming serve and an aggressive baseline game, Zheng excels at dictating points with heavy topspin and powerful groundstrokes. To counter that, Eala will need to stay on the front foot, take the ball early, and consistently pressure her opponent with deep returns.
