Abra survives Biñan challenge, extends unbeaten surge to 16 games

The Abra Solid North Weavers continue to prove why they remain the team to beat in the MPBL.

Defending champion Abra overcame a determined challenge from Biñan Tatak Gel, holding on for a 63-53 victory on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna, to extend its winning streak to 16 games.

The game was far from easy for the league-leading Weavers, who had to withstand a late push from a Biñan squad that entered the matchup riding a 13-game winning streak.

But when the pressure mounted, Abra found the answers.

DJ Fenner delivered the finishing touch, scoring seven points in the final five minutes to turn a tight battle into a comfortable 60-51 advantage. His late-game execution helped Abra improve to 18-1 and remain at the top of the North Division standings.

Biñan appeared ready to make another comeback when Renzo Subido connected from beyond the arc to bring the Heroes within two points at 51-49.

But reigning MVP Dave Ildefonso immediately answered with a three-pointer, preventing the momentum from shifting completely.

After Marc Pingris kept Biñan alive with a basket inside, Fenner and the Weavers took over. A jumper from Fenner, a basket from Shaun Ildefonso, and another mid-range conversion from Fenner gave Abra the separation it needed.

Ildefonso once again showed why he remains one of the league’s most complete players, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two blocks to claim Best Player of the Game honors for the third consecutive contest.

Fenner led Abra in scoring with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jake Figueroa added 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Raven Gonzales provided the defensive anchor, producing five points, nine rebounds, and three blocks—including two huge rejections on Pingris during the final minutes—as the Weavers limited Biñan to just two points in the closing stretch.

The defeat ended Biñan’s impressive 13-game run and dropped the Heroes to 16-4, but they remained among the South Division’s top contenders.

Nic Cabanero paced Biñan with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists, while Kenny Rocacurva and Michael Mabulac each scored eight points.

Meanwhile, Meycauayan Marilao continued its playoff push by defeating Parañaque, 91-80.

Pasturan powered the Gems with 22 points highlighted by six three-pointers, while Miranda nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and nine assists.

Matillano led Parañaque with 25 points and nine rebounds, but the Patriots fell further to 2-21.

Abra’s latest victory served as another reminder of its championship credentials, while the rest of the league continues chasing the standard set by the defending champions.
