São João del-Rei is a Brazilian football club from the historic city of São João del-Rei in Minas Gerais. The club represents the Campo das Vertentes region and carries the proud footballing identity of one of Brazil’s most traditional interior cities.

Club Overview

São João del-Rei plays its home matches at the Estádio Joaquim Portugal, a venue that brings together local families, traveling supporters, and the club’s youth teams. The team’s colors are red, white, and black, and its nickname, O Leão do Campo das Vertentes (The Lion of the Campo das Vertentes), reflects the club’s ambition to be the region’s leading football force.

Competition and Regional Football

The club competes in the Campeonato Mineiro Módulo II, the second division of the Minas Gerais state championship. Strong performances can also earn a place in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, the national fourth tier. Supporters follow São João del-Rei standings, results, and top scorers throughout the state campaign, hoping for a return to the elite Módulo I alongside giants like Cruzeiro, Atlético Mineiro, and América Mineiro.

Style of Play

Like many Brazilian interior clubs, São João del-Rei values technical skill and attacking football. The team usually sets up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2, looking to get the ball to its wide players quickly. The full-backs join the attack, and the midfield looks to play vertical passes into the striker’s feet. Set pieces are a major weapon, with tall defenders causing problems in both boxes.

Key Players and Academy

Attacking midfielder João Vitor is the team’s creative spark, capable of unlocking defenses with through balls and long shots. Striker Pedro Henrique leads the line with strength and finishing, while winger Gabriel Souza provides pace on the counter. The club’s youth academy is a source of local pride, developing players who go on to represent larger clubs in Minas Gerais and beyond.

Rivalry and Matchday Culture

The local rivalry with Athletic Club, another club from São João del-Rei, is the fixture that defines the season. The derby divides the city and fills the Estádio Joaquim Portugal with color, noise, and expectation. Away trips across Minas Gerais are also part of the club’s identity, with loyal supporters making long journeys to back the team.

Season Goals

São João del-Rei’s goal is to challenge for promotion to the Campeonato Mineiro Módulo I and to secure a place in national competition. That requires a strong home record, disciplined defending, and goals from multiple sources. If the team can stay healthy and manage the demanding state calendar, it has the talent to make a serious push.
