São João del Rei 1-0 Paracatu DF: Narrow Home Win Shakes Up Campeonato Mineiro 2

São João del Rei secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paracatu DF in the Campeonato Mineiro 2 on October 10, 2026, earning three valuable points in the Minas Gerais state football pyramid. A single second-half goal settled a tense, tactical contest at Estádio Municipal Joaquim Portugal, where the hosts controlled long spells but had to survive a late surge from the visitors.

The result gives São João del Rei an important boost in the Campeonato Mineiro 2 standings, while Paracatu DF leave empty-handed after a disciplined away performance that ultimately lacked the cutting edge needed to take something from the match.

Match Overview

São João del Rei began the game on the front foot, dictating possession and pushing Paracatu DF deep into their own half. The home side looked to use width early, stretching the visitors’ midfield block and delivering crosses into the penalty area. Paracatu DF responded with a compact 4-4-2 shape, defending in numbers and looking to spring quick counterattacks through their wide players.

The first half produced chances but no goals. São João del Rei’s best opportunities came from set pieces and second balls around the edge of the box, while Paracatu DF grew into the game as the half wore on, forcing two smart saves from the home goalkeeper. At the break, the scoreline remained 0-0, but the pattern of the match was clear: the hosts had the territory, and the visitors had the resilience.

Key Moments

• 12th minute: São João del Rei created the first clear opening, with a low cross from the right narrowly evading the incoming striker at the back post.
• 28th minute: Paracatu DF produced their best counterattack of the first half, breaking three-on-two before a last-ditch sliding challenge from the home center-back snuffed out the danger.
• 45+1 minute: A whipped free kick from the left forced the Paracatu DF goalkeeper into a diving save, keeping the game level at halftime.
• 63rd minute: The breakthrough finally arrived for São João del Rei. After a short corner was worked back into the box, the ball fell kindly to Rafael Costa, who reacted quickest to stab home from close range and send the home supporters into celebration.
• 78th minute: Paracatu DF nearly equalized with their most fluent move of the match, but a strong one-handed save from the São João del Rei goalkeeper preserved the lead.
• 90+4 minute: In the final moments, a goal-line clearance from a São João del Rei defender denied Paracatu DF a dramatic late equalizer.

Tactical Story

São João del Rei set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the full-backs pushing high to create overloads in wide areas. The midfield double pivot recycled possession efficiently, allowing the attacking trio to drift between the lines. The hosts’ best work came when they switched play quickly, forcing Paracatu DF’s midfield to cover large distances.

Paracatu DF, by contrast, defended in a disciplined 4-4-2 mid-block. Their front two worked hard to cut off central passing lanes, and their wingers dropped deep to protect the full-backs. For much of the match, the plan worked. The visitors limited São João del Rei to half-chances and threatened on the break, but the decisive moment came from a set-piece routine rather than open play.

After taking the lead, São João del Rei dropped into a 4-1-4-1 shape, protecting the central corridor and inviting Paracatu DF to play around them. The visitors pushed bodies forward in the final 15 minutes, but the home defense held firm, clearing crosses and winning crucial aerial duels. It was a mature game-management performance from the hosts, who saw out five minutes of stoppage time without panicking.

Standout Players

Rafael Costa was the match-winner for São João del Rei, not only for his 63rd-minute goal but also for his intelligent movement and hold-up play. He repeatedly occupied both center-backs, creating space for runners behind him and giving the home side a focal point in the final third.

The São João del Rei goalkeeper also deserves credit for two important saves, including the 78th-minute stop that kept the lead intact. In front of him, the center-back pairing dealt well with Paracatu DF’s late aerial barrage, winning headers and clearing their lines under pressure.

For Paracatu DF, the goalkeeper produced a string of saves to keep the score at 1-0, while the team captain in midfield was the driving force behind their best spells. His pressing and distribution gave the visitors a platform to counter, even if the final pass too often went astray.
