SGV Freiberg and TSV Steinbach Haiger played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the German Regionalliga on 3 October 2026, with a late equaliser denying the hosts all three points at the Wasenstadion. The result leaves both sides still searching for consistency in the early weeks of the season.

Match Overview

Freiberg started brightly and took the game to their visitors, using the width of the pitch to stretch Steinbach Haiger’s back four. The opening goal came after a period of sustained pressure, but the lead lasted only ten minutes as Steinbach responded with a well-worked move of their own. The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams committing numbers forward and creating a host of chances.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Freiberg take the lead when Luca Pfeiffer fires home from just inside the penalty area after a neat lay-off.
• 29th minute: Steinbach Haiger equalise through a close-range finish from Timo Becker following a goalmouth scramble.
• 63rd minute: The visitors go ahead for the first time, Nico Müller converting a penalty after a handball appeal.
• 84th minute: Freiberg rescue a point as Marvin Schmidt heads in a deep cross at the back post.

Tactical Story

Both managers opted for aggressive 4-2-3-1 systems, which led to a high-tempo contest with plenty of turnovers in midfield. Freiberg’s full-backs pushed high, leaving space in behind, and Steinbach Haiger looked dangerous on the counter. However, the hosts’ persistence paid off late on when they switched to a more direct approach, pumping crosses into the box and ultimately finding the equaliser.

Standout Players

Luca Pfeiffer was a constant threat for Freiberg, scoring one and forcing a fine save from the goalkeeper. Marvin Schmidt’s late header capped a strong all-round display from the defender. For Steinbach Haiger, Nico Müller’s composure from the spot and Timo Becker’s tireless running in midfield stood out.

Season Impact

The draw keeps both teams in the mid-table cluster, with Freiberg perhaps the happier side given they had to come from behind. Steinbach Haiger will rue missed chances to kill the game off, but their attacking intent suggests they will climb the table if they can tighten up defensively.
