SC Paderborn 07 II and Borussia Dortmund II played out a 1-1 draw in the German Regionalliga on 22 September 2026, a result that underlined the competitive nature of reserve-team football and the fine margins that separate the sides in the table. Both teams had spells of control, but neither could find the winning goal in the closing stages.

Match overview

Borussia Dortmund II started the match with the sharper passing, using their midfield rotations to pull Paderborn out of shape. The visitors took the lead during their strongest period, finishing off a move that began with a quick turnover and ended with a precise effort from the edge of the box. Paderborn 07 II responded with intensity, pressing higher and forcing Dortmund into hurried clearances.

The equaliser came before the break, and it was no more than Paderborn deserved. A well-delivered cross from the right was met with a strong run into the penalty area, and the finish was emphatic enough to leave the Dortmund goalkeeper with no chance. The second half was more cautious, with both teams protecting the point they had while still searching for a breakthrough.

Tactical story

Dortmund II looked most dangerous when they played through the lines quickly, with their attacking midfielders finding pockets of space. Paderborn 07 II, by contrast, were at their best when they pressed aggressively and turned defence into attack. The home side’s equaliser came from exactly that kind of moment: a regained possession, a fast switch to the wing and a delivery into the box.

After the interval, Dortmund II controlled more of the ball, but Paderborn’s defensive shape held firm. The hosts were content to sit slightly deeper and counter, while Dortmund searched for a moment of individual quality. In the end, both defences made the decisive interventions.

Standout performers

Paderborn’s goalkeeper was one of the most influential players on the pitch, making two important saves in the second half. Their centre-back also produced a commanding display in the air. For Dortmund II, the most impressive performers were the deep-lying midfielder, who dictated tempo, and the right winger, whose direct running caused problems throughout.

Standings and season impact

The draw keeps both teams in the thick of the Regionalliga conversation. For Borussia Dortmund II, it is a useful away point against a physically strong opponent, though they may feel they had enough possession to win. SC Paderborn 07 II will be pleased with the character shown after falling behind, and the result adds another tight chapter to their season. In a league where consistency is crucial, both sides will view this as a result to build on rather than a setback.
