Kickers Emden 2-2 Phonix Lubeck: Four-goal Regionalliga thriller ends level

Kickers Emden and Phonix Lubeck played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Ostfriesland-Stadion on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with both sides twice finding the net in a lively German Regionalliga encounter. The teams traded momentum throughout, and a late equaliser ensured the points were shared.

Emden showed character to recover from setbacks, while Lubeck’s attacking intent caused problems all afternoon. In the end, neither defence could hold out, and the draw felt like a fair outcome from a match full of energy and chances.

Match overview

Lubeck made the brighter start and took the lead inside the opening 20 minutes, capitalising on a quick transition. Emden responded well, equalising before half-time with a well-timed run into the box. The second half was even more open, with Lubeck restoring their advantage midway through before Emden struck again late on.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy, and the game could have swung either way in the final 10 minutes. Emden pushed hard for a winner, while Lubeck looked dangerous on the break. The final whistle brought an end to a breathless contest and left both sides with a point to show for their efforts.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Phonix Lubeck take the lead with a low finish after a fast counter-attack.
• 34th minute: Kickers Emden equalise, converting a cross from close range after sustained pressure.
• 58th minute: Lubeck restore their advantage with a header from a set-piece.
• 82nd minute: Emden level again, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing home.

Tactical story

Lubeck’s game plan revolved around quick transitions and getting runners in behind Emden’s full-backs. They looked particularly dangerous when winning the ball in midfield and attacking before the home side could reset. Emden, however, grew into the game by pressing higher and forcing Lubeck into hurried passes.

Set-pieces proved important, with both sides creating chances from dead-ball situations. Emden’s substitutions also made a difference, adding fresh legs in the final third and helping the hosts sustain pressure late on. Lubeck defended with numbers but could not fully contain Emden’s aerial threat, which ultimately cost them the second equaliser.

Standout performers

Emden’s substitute forward made an immediate impact, stretching the Lubeck defence and playing a key role in the late equaliser. The home captain drove the midfield with energy and composure. For Lubeck, the attacking midfielder was the standout creative force, linking play and setting up several dangerous moments, while their centre-forward’s movement kept the Emden back line occupied.

Season impact

The draw keeps both teams competitive in the tightly packed Regionalliga table. Emden will take heart from their resilience after twice coming from behind, but they will also reflect on the chances conceded. Lubeck showed attacking quality but will be disappointed not to have held on to their second lead. Both sides now look ahead to their next fixtures with plenty to work on and positives to build from.
