FC Schöningen 08 opened their German Regionalliga campaign with a solid 2-0 home win over SV Todesfelde, producing a controlled performance that underlined their ambitions for the season. Two first-half goals were enough to earn the points, as the visitors struggled to find a way back into the match.

Early breakthrough for Schöningen

The Nordschleswig-based visitors started brightly and enjoyed plenty of early possession, but it was Schöningen who struck first. Just short of the half-hour mark, a good spell of pressure resulted in a corner, and central defender Jan-Hendrik Meier rose highest to nod the ball into the net from close range. The goal gave the home side the lead and temporarily quietened the travelling support.

Todesfelde continued to show neat passing combinations and looked to respond quickly, yet they were caught on the counter-attack when Schöningen doubled their advantage. A rapid transition through the middle released striker Tjark Petersen, who remained composed before slotting the ball underneath the onrushing goalkeeper. They enjoyed their best spell of the game during the opening 20 minutes of the second half, forcing a series of saves from the Schöningen goalkeeper. The clearest opportunity came when a well-worked set-piece presented a free header, but the effort flashed narrowly past the post.

As the half wore on, Schöningen readjusted their shape and began to regain control. They created several chances of their own to add a third but were unable to convert, leaving the score at 2-0 at the final whistle.
