Portugal Women's Super Cup: The Taça Super

The Portugal Women's Super Cup, known as the Taça Super, is the traditional season-opening match in Portuguese women's basketball. It is contested between the reigning champions of the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol and the holders of the Taça de Portugal (Cup of Portugal). This annual clash serves as a glamorous curtain-raiser, offering the first piece of silverware of the new season and setting the stage for the domestic battles ahead.

A Showcase of the Best

Held in September, the Super Cup is a standalone final played at a neutral venue, often designed to promote the women's game to a wider audience. It provides an early test for both teams, allowing coaches to assess their squads under competitive pressure. For the players, it's a chance to immediately compete for a trophy, adding real stakes to what might otherwise be a preseason friendly. The match frequently features the country's top talent and has become a celebrated fixture in the basketball calendar.

Recent History and Competitive Significance

The trophy has been frequently claimed by the dominant forces in Portuguese women's basketball, such as União Sportiva and Sport Algés e Dafundo. When one club achieves the domestic double, the runner-up from the cup competition is invited, ensuring a compelling matchup. Winning the Super Cup provides a team with early-season confidence and momentum, establishing them as the team to beat as the long Liga Feminina campaign gets underway.
