Akademiya Kazan Cruise to Straight-Sets Win Over Makhachkala

Akademiya Kazan delivered a dominant home performance in the Vysshaya Liga A, sweeping Makhachkala 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) on October 28, 2026. The victory reinforces Kazan’s reputation as one of the league’s most disciplined sides, while Makhachkala were left searching for answers after a night of relentless pressure from the hosts.

The match, played at the Akademiya Kazan sports complex, was billed as a test of Kazan’s title credentials against a Makhachkala team known for its scrappy defense. Instead, the home side controlled proceedings from the opening serve, blending powerful attacking with a blocking wall that Makhachkala simply could not breach.

Set-by-Set Breakdown

First set: Kazan raced to an early 8-3 lead, forcing Makhachkala into a timeout. The hosts’ serving was aggressive, targeting the visiting libero and disrupting their reception. With middle blocker Dmitri Volkov controlling the net, Kazan closed the set 25-18.

Second set: Makhachkala improved their block coverage and briefly led 12-10, but Kazan’s outside hitter Ilya Sokolov took over. A string of cross-court kills and a well-timed ace from setter Pavel Antonov swung the momentum back. Kazan won four of the final five points to take it 25-21.

Third set: The visitors never recovered. Kazan’s defense was impenetrable, with libero Sergei Markov digging several powerful spikes. A late run of six consecutive points sealed the set 25-19 and the match.

Tactical Masterclass

Kazan’s game plan was built on two pillars: aggressive serving and a compact block. By limiting Makhachkala’s first-tempo attacks, they forced the visitors into predictable outside sets, which Kazan’s blockers read perfectly. Head coach Andrei Petrov rotated his bench in the third set, giving young opposite Maxim Denisov valuable minutes without any drop in quality.

Makhachkala’s struggles in reception were compounded by unforced errors at crucial moments. Their star attacker, Magomed Aliyev, was held to just 11 points, well below his season average. The visitors’ coach, Rustam Gadzhiev, acknowledged the gap in execution: “Kazan served us off the court. We need to be more resilient.”

Standout Performers

• Ilya Sokolov (Kazan): 18 points, including 15 kills and 2 aces, with a 58% attack efficiency.
• Dmitri Volkov (Kazan): 6 blocks and 9 kills, dominating the middle.
• Sergei Markov (Kazan): 14 successful digs and zero reception errors.
• Magomed Aliyev (Makhachkala): 11 points but was forced into 7 attack errors.

What It Means

The three points lift Akademiya Kazan into the upper echelon of the Vysshaya Liga A standings, with the team now unbeaten in its last four matches. For Makhachkala, the defeat exposes a need for greater consistency in serve-receive, especially on the road. Kazan next faces a challenging away trip, but on this form, they look like genuine promotion contenders.
