How the match turned

After Michelbeke took the first set, Helchteren made the adjustments that mattered. Their block became more disciplined, and their defence started to pick up more balls that had previously fallen for Michelbeke points. The second set was the turning point: Helchteren controlled the middle phase and, once they had levelled the match, looked the more confident side.

The third set was the most competitive of the night. Michelbeke stayed close and had chances to regain the lead, but Helchteren’s composure in the closing rallies proved decisive. With a 2-1 advantage, the visitors stepped up again in the fourth and quickly built a lead that Michelbeke could not erase.

Tactical story

Helchteren’s serving and blocking combination was the foundation of the win. They targeted Michelbeke’s reception line effectively, preventing the home side from running their preferred offence. When Michelbeke were forced into high-ball situations, Helchteren’s block was ready and their back-row defenders positioned themselves well for the rebound.

Michelbeke’s best volleyball came in the first set, when their setter was able to use the middle and create one-on-one situations for the outside hitters. As the match wore on, however, their first contact became less reliable and their attack became easier for Helchteren to read. The visitors also won the battle at the net in the latter stages.

Standout performers

Femke Wouters was central to Helchteren’s comeback, delivering timely kills and serving runs. Noor Hendrix added important points from the middle and helped control the net in the third and fourth sets. Michelbeke’s Julie Simons fought hard in attack and Elke D’Hondt produced some bright defensive moments, but the home side could not maintain their early momentum.

Season impact

The victory gives Helchteren Women a useful three points in the Volley League Women standings and highlights their ability to recover after a difficult opening set. For Richia Michelbeke Women, the loss is a reminder of how quickly a match can shift when reception and side-out efficiency drop. The result adds another competitive chapter to the league’s early-season head-to-head picture and puts both teams under pressure to improve in the next round.
