How the match unfolded

Gent Dames started brightly and took the opening set 25-22, using their wing attack and home-court energy to keep Haasrode Leuven under pressure. The visitors responded in the second set, tightening their serving and blocking to level the match with a 25-22 win.

The third set was Gent’s best stretch. The hosts found a good rhythm in attack and pulled away to take it 25-20, moving within one set of victory. But Haasrode Leuven refused to fade. The visitors increased their serve pressure in the fourth, forced Gent into more difficult attacking situations and took the set 25-21 to force a decider.

The fifth set was tight throughout. Both teams traded points, but Haasrode Leuven’s composure in the final rallies made the difference. The visitors edged ahead late and closed out the match 15-13, completing an important road comeback.

Tactical story: Leuven’s late serve-and-block adjustment

Haasrode Leuven’s comeback was built on a tactical shift after the third set. The visitors served more aggressively, particularly targeting Gent’s reception lines, and their block became more disciplined against the home side’s outside attack. That combination slowed Gent’s scoring and allowed Leuven to control longer rallies.

Gent Dames had enough attacking quality to stay in the match, but their efficiency dropped in the fourth and fifth sets. Too many points came from difficult swings, and Leuven’s defense took advantage. In the deciding set, the visitors were calmer in transition and converted the few clear chances that came their way.

Standout performers

Haasrode Leuven’s setter was influential in the comeback, varying the attack and keeping the team composed under pressure. The visiting outside hitter delivered key points in the fourth and fifth sets, while the middle blockers provided important resistance at the net.

For Gent Dames, the opposite hitter and libero produced strong performances, keeping the team competitive deep into the match. Gent’s middle attack worked well in the third set, but the hosts needed more consistency from the service line in the closing stages.

Standings impact and what comes next

The 3-2 win gives Haasrode Leuven a valuable result in the Volley League standings and reinforces the team’s ability to win tight matches. For Gent Dames, the defeat will feel like a missed opportunity after leading 2-1, but the performance showed the team can compete at a high level.

Leuven will look to carry their late-match execution into the next fixture, while Gent will focus on maintaining their attacking rhythm and improving their side-out consistency in decisive sets.
