Gent Dames edged Brabo Antwerp 3-2 in a gripping Volley League encounter on October 18, 2026, turning a tense five-set contest into a home celebration. The hosts claimed the deciding set 15-12, securing a hard-fought victory after Brabo Antwerp had repeatedly fought their way back into the match.

Match overview: Gent Dames hold their nerve

The set scores reflected just how tightly the contest was balanced: 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12. Gent Dames made the stronger start, using aggressive serving and a well-organized block to take the opening set. Brabo Antwerp responded immediately, tightening their reception and finding more consistency in transition to level the match.

Gent Dames regained control in the third set, building a small but decisive cushion midway through the frame. Brabo Antwerp refused to fade, though, and forced a fifth set with a composed finish in the fourth. In the decider, the home side’s experience and patience under pressure proved decisive as Gent Dames closed out the win in front of their own supporters.

Key moments that decided the thriller

• Late first-set surge: Gent Dames broke away near the end of the opening set, converting defensive chances into quick transition points.
• Antwerp’s second-set answer: Brabo Antwerp raised their serving pressure and disrupted Gent’s attacking rhythm to level the match.
• Third-set separation: A short run of blocks and smart shot selection gave Gent Dames the breathing room they needed to take a 2-1 lead.
• Fourth-set resilience: Brabo Antwerp saved their best volleyball for the closing stages, extending the match and silencing the home crowd briefly.
• Fifth-set composure: With the score tight in the decider, Gent Dames won the crucial side-out rallies and finished the match with a calm final swing.

Tactical story: serving, blocking and transition

Gent Dames’ victory was built on a patient serving strategy that targeted Brabo Antwerp’s reception lines, forcing the visitors into predictable attacking patterns. When Antwerp’s first contact drifted away from the net, Gent’s middle blockers were able to read the setter and close the block, creating valuable transition opportunities.

Brabo Antwerp adjusted well after the opening set, using quicker attacks and more varied distribution to keep Gent’s block guessing. Their defence also improved as the match wore on, extending rallies and turning several seemingly lost points into counterattacks. In the end, however, Gent Dames had the clearer plan in the biggest moments of the fifth set.

Standout performers and team effort

Gent Dames’ opposite hitter provided a reliable outlet in pressure situations, while the team’s captain brought calm leadership during the frantic final set. The home side’s libero also played a key role, keeping rallies alive with sharp floor defence and giving Gent the chance to counter through the middle.

For Brabo Antwerp, the outside hitters carried much of the attacking load and kept the visitors competitive throughout. Their setter varied the offence effectively, and the team’s blocking improved significantly as the match progressed. It was a performance that deserved a point, even if the win slipped away in the closing rallies.

Volley League impact

The result gives Gent Dames a valuable two-point haul from a five-set victory, while Brabo Antwerp leave with one point for taking the match the distance. In a Volley League season where every point can shape the standings, the difference between a 3-2 win and a narrow defeat could matter later in the campaign.

Gent Dames will take confidence from their ability to win a match that did not always flow smoothly, while Brabo Antwerp can build on a resilient display that tested one of the league’s competitive home sides. The five-set battle adds another absorbing chapter to the recent head-to-head between the two clubs and underlines just how fine the margins are in the Volley League.
