Lazdukalns/Balvu W is a women's volleyball team based in the town of Balvi, in the Latgale region of Latvia. Formed through a partnership between the Lazdukalns and Balvu sports organizations, the club competes in the Latvian Women's Volleyball League and has also made appearances in the Baltic Women's Volleyball League. Known for their tenacious defense and team-first mentality, they have become a respected competitor in the Baltic volleyball landscape, representing the smaller towns of Latvia with pride and determination.

Formation and Club Identity

The club was established in 2005 when two local volleyball initiatives, Lazdukalns and Balvu, decided to merge their resources to create a stronger, more competitive women's team. The name Lazdukalns/Balvu W reflects this dual heritage, and the team's colors—green and white—symbolize the forests and snow of the Latgale region. Their home court is the Balvu Sporta centrs, a modern indoor arena with a capacity of around 800 spectators. Despite its modest size, the arena is known for its lively atmosphere, especially during matches against Riga-based clubs.

Competitive Achievements

Lazdukalns/Balvu W has gradually climbed the ranks of Latvian women's volleyball. Their breakthrough came in 2018 when they won their first Latvian Women's Volleyball League title, a remarkable achievement for a team from a small town. They repeated as champions in 2020 and have consistently finished in the top three since. In the Baltic Women's Volleyball League, they have reached the quarterfinals on several occasions, holding their own against stronger Estonian and Lithuanian clubs.

• Latvian Cup: Winners (2019)
• Baltic Women's Volleyball League: Quarterfinalists (2021, 2022)

Current Squad and Key Players

The team's success has been built on a core of Latvian players who have developed together over several seasons. Captain and outside hitter Liene Ozola is the heart of the team, leading by example with her all-around play and clutch scoring. Opposite hitter Anete Bērziņa provides firepower from the right side, while middle blocker Ilze Kalniņa is a dominant blocker and a threat on quick attacks. Setter Elīna Vītola runs the offense with composure, and libero Zane Liepa is known for her spectacular digs. The club also occasionally brings in players from neighboring Baltic countries to add experience.

Recent Season and Future Goals

In the most recent Latvian league season, Lazdukalns/Balvu W finished second in the regular season and reached the playoff final, where they lost to the defending champions in a closely contested series. The team showed remarkable resilience, coming back from two sets down in the semifinal to win in five. For the upcoming season, the club aims to reclaim the league title and make a deeper run in the Baltic League. They are also investing in youth development, with the goal of producing more homegrown players for the national team.

Community and Rivalries

As a team from a small town, Lazdukalns/Balvu W has a strong bond with its local community. The club organizes volleyball camps for children and collaborates with schools to promote the sport. Their main rivals are the Riga-based teams, particularly Riga Volleyball School and Jelgava, matches that always draw a passionate crowd. The team's underdog status and never-say-die attitude have earned them neutral fans across Latvia, making them one of the most likable clubs in the country.
