Mielec Women edged out Wroclaw Women in a five-set thriller in the TAURON Liga Women on Saturday night, winning 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12 in a match that swung back and forth until the very last rally.

In a contest featuring long rallies, heavy serving and momentum shifts in almost every set, it was Mielec's composure in the deciding tie-break that proved decisive. The visitors claimed a valuable road win in Poland's top women's volleyball division, while Wroclaw were left to reflect on a match they led at stages and could easily have won.

Set-by-set: how the match unfolded

Wroclaw made the stronger start in front of their home supporters, using an aggressive serve to keep Mielec out of system and building a three-point cushion midway through the opening set. Mielec fought back to 22-24, but a well-taken transition kill from the home side closed it out 25-22.

The second set followed a mirror image. Mielec adjusted their reception formation and began attacking more through the middle, which opened space on the wings. They led for most of the frame and levelled the match with a 25-22 win of their own.

Wroclaw reasserted control in the third. Their block found its timing against Mielec's opposite hitter, and a dominant run from 12-11 to 19-13 effectively decided the set. The home side took it 25-20 and moved within one set of victory.

That was when Mielec produced their best volleyball of the night. Serving with renewed aggression and defending with real desperation, they broke Wroclaw's rhythm early in the fourth set and never let it return. A 25-19 win forced the match into a tie-break.

The deciding set was everything a five-setter should be. The teams traded points to 8-8 before Mielec edged ahead with a block and a service winner. Wroclaw saved one match point at 11-14, but Mielec's next attack found the corner and sealed a 15-12 victory.

Tactical story

This match was decided by adjustments at the service line and at the net. Mielec's turnaround in sets two and four came from better first contact, which allowed their setter to involve the middles and pull Wroclaw's block out of position. In the tie-break, they simplified further — high-percentage serves, disciplined block, and trust in their opposite hitter in transition.

Wroclaw's best spells came when their block was set early and their libero was reading the angles. The difficulty was sustaining that intensity across five sets; as the match wore on, their attacking efficiency dropped and Mielec's defensive coverage looked increasingly comfortable.

Standout performers

Mielec's opposite hitter was the outstanding individual on the night, shouldering a heavy workload and delivering repeatedly in the fourth set and tie-break. Their middle blocker also made a significant impact, combining scoring with several crucial blocks in the closing stages.

For Wroclaw, the outside hitter who powered the third-set surge was their most consistent attacking threat, while their setter produced an intelligent distribution that kept the offence balanced for long stretches. The captain's leadership in the fourth set kept the home side in contention when the match threatened to slip away.

What it means

Five-set victories in the TAURON Liga Women are worth more than just two points in the standings — they build belief. Mielec leave Wroclaw with momentum and a road result that could prove significant when the league table tightens later in the campaign.

Wroclaw, meanwhile, will feel they let a winning position slip. Taking a set lead twice at home and still losing is a frustrating outcome, but the performance contained plenty of positives. Turning five-set defeats into five-set wins is often the difference between a mid-table finish and a push for the playoff places.
