How the match unfolded

The first set was tight for much of its duration. Modena matched Piacenza early, with both teams trading points through the middle. But Piacenza’s serve began to cause problems for Modena’s reception, and the hosts edged ahead late. A well-placed block and a transition kill sealed the set 25-22.

Piacenza carried the momentum into the second set and established a lead midway through. Modena tried to respond with changes in their attack, but Piacenza’s floor defense held firm. The hosts kept their error count low and closed the set 25-20 to move within one set of victory.

The third set was the most dramatic. Modena raised their level and kept the score close until the final points. Piacenza, however, stayed calm under pressure. A strong serve forced a free ball, and the hosts converted it to take a crucial lead. They finished the match 25-23, completing the sweep.

Tactical story

Piacenza’s serving strategy was effective, targeting Modena’s outside hitters and limiting their ability to run the middle attack. That allowed Piacenza’s block to focus on the pins and made Modena’s attack more predictable. In transition, Piacenza was sharper, converting defense into points with good setter decisions.

Modena’s best spell came in the third set, when they managed to keep the ball in system and create more balanced attacks. But they could not sustain that level at the end of the set, and Piacenza’s experience showed in the closing rallies.

Standout performers

Piacenza’s opposite hitter delivered a strong scoring performance, particularly in the first and third sets. The setter managed the game well, keeping the offense balanced and finding the right matchups. Modena’s middle blocker had some positive moments at the net, while their libero made several important defensive plays to keep the third set alive.

Standings impact

The 3-0 win gave Piacenza three points and a valuable boost in the SuperLega standings. It was also a statement of intent against a traditional rival like Modena. For Modena, the defeat underlined the need for greater consistency in reception and side-out play as they look to climb the table.
