ASK N. Novgorod secured a hard-fought 3-1 home victory over Orenburg in the Russian Superleague on 25 October, responding to the loss of the second set with a composed and increasingly dominant finish. The hosts won 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-18, using a strong block and a patient transition game to pull away in the latter stages. It was a result that underlined ASK’s home-court strength and left Orenburg reflecting on a match that slipped away after a competitive start.

Match overview

The match followed a useful pattern for the hosts: they edged a tight first set, absorbed a setback in the second, then controlled the third and fourth with better serving and defence. Orenburg competed well in the early phases, but as the contest wore on, ASK N. Novgorod’s ability to win the long rallies and convert counter-attacks made the difference. The four-set scoreline gives ASK three valuable points and adds momentum to their early-season campaign.

• Set 1: ASK N. Novgorod 25-22 Orenburg
• Set 2: ASK N. Novgorod 23-25 Orenburg
• Set 3: ASK N. Novgorod 25-20 Orenburg
• Set 4: ASK N. Novgorod 25-18 Orenburg

Key moments

The opening set was tight until the final few points, with neither side able to establish a clear lead. At 22-22, ASK found the decisive response: a strong serve forced a poor pass, the block closed the angle on the next attack and the hosts converted a transition opportunity to take the set 25-22. That late surge set the tone for the evening, even though Orenburg responded well in the second.

Orenburg’s best volleyball came in the second set. They improved their serve-receive, used the middle more effectively and held a narrow lead through the closing points to win 25-23. But ASK made the more telling tactical adjustment at the interval, increasing the pressure from the service line and closing the block on Orenburg’s preferred cross-court attacks. The third set swung decisively at 15-14 when ASK produced a three-point burst, and the fourth set was controlled from start to finish.

Tactical story

ASK N. Novgorod’s victory was built on defence and patience. The hosts kept rallies alive, forced Orenburg into extra swings and then punished overpasses and weak returns with quick transition kills. Their block became more assertive as the match progressed, particularly in the third and fourth sets, when Orenburg’s outside hitters were repeatedly met by a well-formed double block. The home setter also did a good job of distributing the attack, keeping Orenburg’s middle blockers guessing and creating one-on-one opportunities on the wings.

Standout performers

ASK’s opposite hitter delivered a strong all-round performance, scoring in key moments and helping the team recover after the second-set setback. The outside hitter provided important support in transition, while the setter controlled the tempo and made good decisions under pressure. Orenburg had encouraging spells, especially in the second set, but lacked the same level of consistency in the closing stages of sets.

Season impact

The win gives ASK N. Novgorod an important home result and strengthens their position in the Superleague standings. It also shows that the team can respond positively after losing a set, a quality that will be tested repeatedly over a long season. Orenburg leave with useful lessons: their first-set and second-set competitiveness was not matched by the same execution later on. Both sides will now prepare for their next fixtures with ASK buoyed by a four-set victory and Orenburg eager to rediscover their best form.
