Leonessa Altamura Women produced a composed and powerful performance to defeat Casalmaggiore Women 3-1 in a hard-fought Serie A2 Women encounter on Sunday evening. The home side took the first set, survived a determined response from Casalmaggiore in the second, and then reasserted their authority to close out the match in four sets, much to the delight of the home crowd in Altamura.

Match Overview

The contest pitted two sides with contrasting recent form, and it was Altamura who set the tone early with aggressive serving and a well-organised block. Casalmaggiore, known for their resilient defence, struggled to contain the home team’s opposite hitter, who repeatedly found gaps in the visiting block. The second set saw Casalmaggiore raise their level, capitalising on some Altamura errors and forcing a temporary shift in momentum. However, the home side regrouped after the interval and dominated the third and fourth sets to secure a valuable 3-1 victory (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17).

Set-by-Set Story

Altamura started brightly, taking a 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout and never trailing in the opening set. Their serve-receive was solid, allowing the setter to run a balanced attack that kept Casalmaggiore’s block guessing. The visitors fought back in the second, tightening their defence and converting counter-attacks with greater efficiency. A late run of points gave Casalmaggiore the set and levelled the match.

The third set was the turning point. Altamura’s coach made a tactical adjustment, bringing in a more physical presence at the net, and the home team responded with a dominant blocking display. They jumped to a 16-10 lead and never looked back. The fourth set followed a similar pattern, with Altamura’s serving pressure forcing Casalmaggiore into predictable attacking patterns that were easily read and defended.

Key Moments

• First set: A run of three consecutive aces from the Altamura captain broke a 15-15 tie and set the tone for the home win.
• Second set: Casalmaggiore saved two set points before converting their own opportunity, showing the fighting spirit that has defined their season.
• Third set: A spectacular double block by Altamura’s middle blockers early in the set sparked a 6-1 run that effectively decided the match.
• Fourth set: The home side’s opposite hitter sealed the victory with a powerful cross-court kill, her 22nd point of the night.

Tactical Story

Altamura’s game plan revolved around high-risk, high-reward serving to disrupt Casalmaggiore’s offensive rhythm. That strategy paid off, especially in the third and fourth sets, where the visitors’ passing accuracy dropped significantly. Defensively, Altamura’s block was well-timed, often funneling attacks towards their libero, who was outstanding in transition. Casalmaggiore, meanwhile, relied heavily on their outside hitters, but without a consistent middle attack, they became too predictable. Their coach rotated the squad in the third set, but the changes failed to stem the tide.

Standout Performers

For Altamura, the opposite hitter was the standout with 22 points, including four aces and three blocks. The team’s captain and libero also delivered composed performances, keeping the defensive structure intact under pressure. Casalmaggiore’s best player was their outside hitter, who finished with 16 points, but she lacked support from the opposite position, which struggled against Altamura’s tall block.

Standings Impact

This 3-1 win lifts Leonessa Altamura Women into a more comfortable position in the Serie A2 Women standings, keeping their playoff ambitions firmly on track. Casalmaggiore, meanwhile, remain in the mid-table battle and will need to regroup quickly. The three points gained by Altamura could prove crucial as the season progresses, especially with several direct rivals dropping points this weekend. Next up, Altamura travel to face another promotion contender, while Casalmaggiore host a must-win fixture to halt their slide.
