Grottazzolina secured a confident 3-1 home victory over Virtus Volley Fano in Serie A2, using a strong serving performance and a balanced attack to take control after a tightly contested opening exchange. The home side dropped the second set but responded with authority, closing the match with two convincing sets.

Match overview

Grottazzolina entered the match with intent from the service line and quickly established a tempo that Virtus Volley Fano struggled to match. The visitors competed well in the second set, finding ways to extend rallies and put pressure on the home reception, but Grottazzolina restored order after the interval and dominated the decisive phases.

• Set 1: Grottazzolina 25-20 Virtus Volley Fano
• Set 2: Grottazzolina 23-25 Virtus Volley Fano
• Set 3: Grottazzolina 25-18 Virtus Volley Fano
• Set 4: Grottazzolina 25-21 Virtus Volley Fano

The first set set the tone: Grottazzolina served aggressively, forced Fano into several out-of-system attacks, and converted enough transition chances to build a comfortable lead. Fano improved in the second set, raising their block intensity and finding more joy through the wings, but they could not sustain that level once Grottazzolina adjusted.

Key moments

The third set was where the match truly broke open. Grottazzolina raced ahead early through a sequence of powerful serves and well-read blocks, forcing Virtus Volley Fano into a timeout. The home side’s middle attackers became increasingly involved, stretching Fano’s block and creating one-on-one opportunities for the outside hitters.

In the fourth set, Fano stayed close until the middle stages, but Grottazzolina’s composure in long rallies proved decisive. A few crucial defensive plays from the back row kept points alive, and the home side converted their chances at the net. When the final points arrived, Grottazzolina managed the pressure better and closed out the match without allowing a late comeback.

Tactical story

Grottazzolina’s serve-receive balance was the foundation of the win. Their reception allowed the setter to use the middle more consistently, which in turn opened space for the opposite and outside hitters. The home team also defended the floor well, turning several apparently lost rallies into scoring opportunities.

Virtus Volley Fano had their moments, particularly in the second set, when their block began to slow down Grottazzolina’s attack. However, Fano’s serving became more error-prone as the match progressed, and their transition game lacked the same efficiency. Grottazzolina’s ability to reset after losing the second set was a mark of their maturity.

Standout players

Grottazzolina outside hitter Federico Rossi produced a match-high 22 points, combining powerful swings with intelligent shot selection. Opposite Andrea Bellini added 18 points, while middle blocker Simone Carli contributed five blocks and kept Fano’s attackers honest through the middle.

For Virtus Volley Fano, Marco Bianchi led the scoring with 18 points and was particularly effective in the second set. Setter Luca Pagni tried to vary the attack and involve the middles, but Fano’s reception came under too much pressure in the third and fourth sets to sustain that plan.

Standings and season impact

The home win strengthens Grottazzolina’s position in the Serie A2 standings and gives them momentum heading into the next round. Virtus Volley Fano leave with a competitive performance but will need to improve their serving consistency and side-out efficiency against the league’s stronger servers. The result underlines how important home-court advantage can be in a tightly packed Serie A2 season.
