Pineto delivered a composed road performance to defeat Gioia del Colle 3-1 in Serie A2, overturning an early setback with sharper serving and a more disciplined block as the match wore on. The visitors took a valuable away win, while Gioia del Colle were left frustrated after a strong opening set slipped away from them.

Match overview

The contest turned into a test of patience and reception quality. Gioia del Colle began with energy from the service line and used the home crowd to build an early lead, but Pineto gradually found their rhythm in side-out and began to win the longer rallies. Once the visitors tightened their block-defense relationship, the match shifted decisively in their favour.

• Set 1: Gioia del Colle 25-22 Pineto
• Set 2: Gioia del Colle 21-25 Pineto
• Set 3: Gioia del Colle 19-25 Pineto
• Set 4: Gioia del Colle 20-25 Pineto

Gioia’s first-set success came through positive attacking transitions and a few well-timed blocks, but Pineto responded by reducing their unforced errors and forcing the home side into more predictable attacking choices. From the second set onward, the visitors looked the more balanced team.

Key moments

The second set was the turning point. With the score level in the middle stages, Pineto produced a short run of points behind aggressive jump serving, disrupting Gioia’s reception and limiting the home setter’s options in transition. That pressure allowed the Pineto block to load up on Gioia’s outside hitters, and the visitors closed the set with greater authority.

In the third set, Pineto’s advantage grew as their middle blockers began to read Gioia’s attack more clearly. A pair of consecutive blocks early in the set gave the visitors a cushion they protected comfortably. Gioia tried to change the tempo with substitutions and more varied serving, but Pineto’s side-out game remained stable. The fourth set was more competitive, yet Pineto found the decisive separation late on, converting transition chances and keeping their error count low.

Tactical story

Pineto’s serving strategy was central to the result. They targeted Gioia’s reception line with a mix of deep float serves and harder jump serves, preventing the home team from running their preferred middle attack. That made Gioia more dependent on high-ball swings from the wings, where Pineto’s block could set up more effectively.

Gioia del Colle showed flashes of quality, particularly in the opening set, but their attacking rhythm became fragmented as the match progressed. Too many rallies ended with emergency swings or free balls, and Pineto punished those moments in transition. The visitors also managed the closing stages better, committing fewer service errors when the sets were on the line.

Standout players

Pineto’s opposite hitter Matteo Ferri led the scoring with a match-high 24 points, including four aces and several important transition kills. His ability to score from the right side gave Pineto a reliable outlet whenever reception was imperfect. Outside hitter Luca Serra added 16 points and did valuable work in defence, while the middle duo combined for seven blocks.

For Gioia del Colle, Andrea Latorre top-scored with 19 points and carried much of the attacking load, but he received limited support in the decisive sets. Libero Marco D’Amico produced several impressive digs, though the home side’s reception consistency ultimately proved too fragile against Pineto’s serving pressure.

Standings and season impact

The away win gives Pineto an important boost in the early Serie A2 standings and confirms their ability to win on difficult road trips. For Gioia del Colle, the result is a reminder that strong starts must be backed by sustained execution in reception and transition. Both teams will take clear lessons from the match as the Serie A2 season gathers momentum.
