ASK N. Novgorod produced a strong road performance to eliminate Surgut Region in the Russia Cup, winning 3-1 on Saturday, 26 September 2026. The visitors recovered from a slow start to take the match with set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21, clinically turning the tie around after dropping the opening set.

Cup volleyball demands sharpness across a short format, and ASK N. Novgorod showed exactly that after the first set, raising their serving level and controlling the net to deny Surgut Region the momentum they had built early on.

Match overview

Surgut Region began brightly, taking the first set 25-22 with a well-organised block and some effective work from the wings. The hosts looked comfortable in front of their own crowd, but the match turned quickly once the visitors found their rhythm from the service line.

From the second set onwards, ASK N. Novgorod were the better team in almost every phase. Their reception stabilised, their setter had more options in the middle, and their block began to read the Surgut attack — a combination that produced three consecutive set wins and a place in the next round.

Set-by-set breakdown

• Set 1 – Surgut Region 25-22: The hosts started with energy, blocking well and converting their chances at the end of a tight set.
• Set 2 – ASK N. Novgorod 25-20: The visitors increased their serving pressure and pulled away in the middle of the set.
• Set 3 – ASK N. Novgorod 25-19: The most controlled set of the match for the away side, who dominated at the net and kept errors low.
• Set 4 – ASK N. Novgorod 25-21: Surgut Region fought hard to force a fifth set, but the visitors held their nerve in the closing points.

Tactical story of the match

The decisive adjustment came at the service line. After the first set, ASK N. Novgorod targeted the deeper seams of the court, disrupting Surgut Region's first contact and forcing them into predictable attacking patterns. That made the visitors' block far more effective and allowed them to score in transition.

Surgut Region's own serving became riskier as the match wore on, chasing the aggressive approach that had worked in the opener. The resulting errors gave ASK N. Novgorod cheap separation in the second and third sets, and by the fourth the visitors were playing with visible confidence.

Standout performers

ASK N. Novgorod's opposite hitter was central to the comeback, taking on a heavy workload in the second and third sets and scoring consistently in the big moments. Their middle blockers also grew into the match, shutting down Surgut's quick attack after the opening set.

For Surgut Region, the first-set performance showed what the team is capable of, with the outside hitters finding success against a well-organised block and the serving creating real problems. Sustaining that level across four sets is the challenge they will take from this cup exit.

What it means for the competition

Cup matches are unforgiving — there is no points cushion and no second chance — so ASK N. Novgorod's 3-1 win sends them forward with momentum and a clear template for how they want to play: serve aggressively, defend with discipline and trust the block.

Surgut Region are left to focus on their league commitments, and there were positives to build on despite the defeat. The opening set in particular offers a blueprint for the standards they will want to reach on a weekly basis.
