Rijeka II produced a composed road performance to defeat Grobnican 3-1 in the Prva Liga, with the set scores reading 22-25, 25-20, 20-25 and 18-25. The visitors’ depth and steady serve-receive game proved decisive in a match that had several momentum swings.

Match overview

Rijeka II started brightly and took the opening set 25-22, but Grobnican responded well in the second. The home side improved their block and found more consistency in attack, levelling the match with a 25-20 set. That response raised hopes of a home comeback, yet Rijeka II regained the initiative after the interval and controlled the rest of the contest.

The third set was the turning point. Grobnican stayed close for long stretches, but Rijeka II pulled away late to win 25-20. The visitors then carried that momentum into the fourth set, building an early lead and closing out the match 25-18. The 3-1 victory gives Rijeka II three important Prva Liga points on the road.

Key moments

Grobnican’s second-set win was their strongest passage of the match. Their block began to connect, and the home crowd responded to a series of long rallies that went their way. However, Rijeka II’s composure in the closing points of the third set changed the complexion of the match.

At 18-18 in the third, Rijeka II produced a decisive run through strong serving and disciplined defence. That late surge took the set away from Grobnican and left the home side chasing the match in the fourth. Rijeka II never allowed Grobnican to build sustained pressure in the final set, sealing the win with a comfortable margin.

Tactical story

• Serve-receive stability: Rijeka II kept their reception organised under pressure, allowing their setter to use the middle more often.
• Late-set execution: The visitors were sharper in the closing points of sets, especially in the third.
• Grobnican’s blocking spell: The home side’s second-set improvement came from better net defence, but they could not sustain it.
• Bench contribution: Rijeka II’s rotations maintained energy and defensive intensity through the latter stages.

Standout performers

Rijeka II’s opposite hitter delivered important points in transition, while their middle blocker made a difference with timely blocks in the third and fourth sets. Grobnican’s captain led the home effort with a committed all-round display, and their setter kept the attack varied during the second-set revival. In the end, Rijeka II’s balance across the court proved too much.

Season impact

The road win strengthens Rijeka II’s position in the Prva Liga standings and underlines their ability to close out matches away from home. For Grobnican, the defeat is a frustrating one because they competed well for long periods, but the third-set finish cost them dearly. Both sides will take clear lessons into their next fixtures.
