Liepaja claimed a 3-1 home victory over Aizpute in the Nacionala Liga on Sunday night, using a strong blocking performance and a decisive third set to take control of the match. The win gave the home side an important boost in the league table and highlighted their ability to respond after dropping a tight second set.

Match overview

Liepaja won the contest 3-1, with the set scores reading 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22. The hosts started confidently, took the opener with a late surge, and then showed resilience after Aizpute levelled the match. From there, Liepaja’s block and transition game took over, allowing them to close out the contest in four sets.

Liepaja’s block anchors the win

The defining feature of Liepaja’s performance was their work at the net. Their middle blockers read Aizpute’s attack well and forced the visitors into difficult angles, particularly in the third and fourth sets. When Aizpute tried to speed up their offence, Liepaja’s serving kept the reception line under pressure and limited the quality of the first contact.

Liepaja’s outside hitters also carried a heavy load in attack, especially during the long rallies that shaped the match. The home side’s setter varied the distribution well, using the middle to keep Aizpute’s block honest before going back to the pins in key moments.

Aizpute’s second-set response

Aizpute deserved credit for the way they fought back in the second set. After losing the opener, they raised their serving intensity and found more success through their opposite hitter. The set remained tight deep into the closing stages, and Aizpute edged it 25-23 to level the match.

That response could have unsettled Liepaja, but the home side regrouped immediately. A strong start to the third set, built on consecutive blocks and a few unforced Aizpute errors, gave Liepaja the cushion they needed. They maintained that advantage throughout the set and took it 25-18.

Key moments and standout contributions

The fourth set was the most competitive of the night. Aizpute stayed within touching distance until the final third of the set, but Liepaja’s defence produced several momentum-changing plays. A spectacular dig from the libero and a block on the right side helped the hosts move ahead late, and they closed out the match 25-22.

• Best stretch for Liepaja: the start of the third set, when their block and serve pressure created separation.
• Best stretch for Aizpute: the closing points of the second set, which briefly brought them back into the contest.
• Decisive factor: Liepaja’s ability to win the long rallies and convert transition opportunities.

What the result means

The 3-1 win gives Liepaja valuable momentum in the Nacionala Liga and reinforces their home-court strength. For Aizpute, the defeat will be frustrating because they competed well in patches, especially in the second and fourth sets, but they could not sustain their attacking efficiency under pressure. Liepaja will look to build on the result, while Aizpute will focus on improving their side-out consistency in the next fixture.
