Puma W secured an important away victory in the Mestaruusliiga Women on Sunday, defeating Nurmon Jymy Women 3-1 in a match that grew steadily in the visitors' favour. Puma took the contest 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, capitalising on superior serving pressure and a defensive effort that grew more confident as the evening progressed.

An even opening exchange

Nurmon Jymy Women began brightly in front of their home crowd, using a fast middle attack to keep Puma's block off balance. The first set was a genuine arm-wrestle, with neither side able to build more than a two-point lead. Puma's edge came late: a clutch service ace at 22-22 and a well-executed slide play from the middle gave them the separation needed to steal the opener 25-23.

Jymy hit back

The hosts responded impressively in the second set, raising their blocking line and forcing Puma into longer, more predictable attacks. Nurmon Jymy's outside hitters found rhythm in transition, and the home libero produced a string of outstanding digs that turned defence into counter-attack. A late run of three points broke the set open, and Jymy levelled the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 win that lifted the home crowd.

Puma take charge after the interval

From the third set onwards, the contest changed character. Puma W adjusted their serving strategy, targeting the seam between the reception lines and forcing Jymy into off-system plays. The result was a steady stream of free balls and comfortable transition opportunities for the visitors, who converted with ruthless efficiency. Puma built an early 8-3 advantage and never let it slip, closing the third set 25-18.

The fourth set was even more one-sided. Nurmon Jymy's passing collapsed under repeated pressure, and Puma's block began to dominate at the net, recording several stuff blocks in quick succession. With their setter dictating tempo and their opposite finding space on the right, Puma raced clear and completed the victory 25-16.

Key moments

• A service ace at 22-22 that swung the opening set Puma's way.
• Nurmon Jymy's three-point burst late in the second set that levelled the match.
• Puma's 8-3 start to the third set, which set the pattern for the rest of the match.
• A cluster of stuff blocks early in the fourth set that ended Jymy's resistance.

Standout performers

Puma W's opposite hitter was the standout attacker on the night, scoring consistently from the right side and delivering in the tight moments of the first set. Their middle blocker made the difference defensively after the break, closing the block and forcing Jymy's hitters into difficult angles. For Nurmon Jymy, the outside hitters carried the load admirably in the first two sets, and the libero's defensive work kept the hosts competitive before the passing unit began to struggle.

Season impact

The win gives Puma W valuable away points in the Mestaruusliiga Women and underlines their ability to adapt mid-match, a quality that tends to matter enormously once the season reaches its decisive phase. Nurmon Jymy Women will take encouragement from their opening two sets but will need to find solutions when reception breaks down, particularly against teams that serve as aggressively as Puma. Both squads leave the evening with clear lessons and clear targets for the rounds ahead.
