Reims Edge Illacaise in Five-Set Ligue B Thriller

Reims claimed a 3-2 victory over Illacaise in Ligue B on 25 October 2026, winning 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12. The match delivered the kind of momentum swings typical of Ligue B volleyball, with both teams trading control before Reims found the decisive plays in the tie-break.

Match Overview

Reims started with better rhythm in serve-receive and took the opening set behind a balanced attack. Illacaise responded well in the second, extending rallies and forcing Reims into rushed transitions. The third set belonged to Reims, whose blocking and serving regained the initiative, but Illacaise refused to fade and pushed the match to a fifth set after a strong fourth-set finish. In the tie-break, Reims’ experience and composure at the net made the difference.

Key Moments

The first set was close until Reims broke away late with two consecutive blocks. Illacaise levelled the match in the second by winning the final three points, including a serve that disrupted Reims’ reception. Reims answered with a strong start to the third set and maintained a comfortable cushion. Illacaise’s fourth-set response set up the decider, where Reims moved ahead 8-5 at the change of ends and held off a late charge. A decisive block at 14-12 sealed the home win.

Tactical Story

Both teams relied heavily on their outside hitters, but Reims had more success varying the attack. Its setter involved the middle early, which created space for the pins later in the match. Illacaise’s defence kept the visitors in contention, and their block improved as the match progressed. The difference came in the fifth set, when Reims reduced errors and forced Illacaise into predictable swings from the left side.

Standout Performers

Reims captain Antoine Mercier led the home side with a composed all-round display, delivering important kills in the tie-break and helping stabilise reception. Illacaise opposite Lucas Perrin was the visitors’ most consistent attacking threat, particularly in the second and fourth sets. Reims’ setter also deserved credit for keeping the offence unpredictable when the match became tight.

Season Impact

The five-set win gives Reims two points and Illacaise one, a reward for a contest that could have gone either way. For Reims, the result builds confidence in close matches and confirms its ability to close out tight sets. Illacaise will take encouragement from the fightback but will regret a few missed opportunities in the deciding set. In the Ligue B table, such margins can matter greatly over the course of the season.
