Chalon-sur-Saone produced a strong away performance to beat Nancy 3-2 in Ligue B, recovering from a 2-1 deficit to win a tense five-set match. The visitors took the decider 15-12 and completed the comeback with set scores of 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Match overview

Nancy started well in front of their home fans, edging a tight opening set 25-23 behind solid serving and a few important blocks. Chalon-sur-Saone responded in the second set, finding more consistency in attack and levelling the match with a 25-20 win. The third set was another close affair, and Nancy regained the lead at 2-1 after taking it 25-22.

Chalon-sur-Saone, however, refused to fade. They controlled the fourth set from the middle phase, winning 25-21 to force a tiebreak, and then held their nerve in the final set. A late serving run and a decisive block gave the visitors the cushion they needed, and they closed out the match 15-12.

Key moments

The fourth set was the turning point. Nancy led briefly at 14-13, but Chalon-sur-Saone won four of the next five points to seize control. In the tiebreak, the visitors moved ahead at 9-7 and kept Nancy at arm’s length. The key rally came at 12-10, when Chalon-sur-Saone’s defence absorbed a series of strong attacks before converting a counter-attack that broke Nancy’s resistance.

Tactical story

Chalon-sur-Saone’s serving strategy was central to the win. They targeted Nancy’s outside passers and forced the home setter into more predictable distributions, allowing the block to set up early. Nancy’s attack was effective when their reception held, especially in the first and third sets, but they struggled to maintain that quality in the fourth and fifth. Chalon-sur-Saone also defended the floor well, extending rallies and converting transition chances at crucial moments.

Standout performers

Chalon-sur-Saone’s opposite hitter delivered a strong all-round display, scoring important points in the fourth set and the tiebreak. Their libero was also influential, keeping several difficult balls alive and helping the visitors maintain pressure. For Nancy, the middle blocker provided a consistent attacking threat and contributed key blocks, while the outside hitters carried much of the scoring load but faded in the final set.

Season impact

The away win gives Chalon-sur-Saone a valuable boost in the Ligue B standings and a head-to-head advantage over Nancy. For Nancy, the defeat is a missed opportunity after leading 2-1, though the performance showed they can compete deep into matches. With the season still developing, the result could prove important in the race for playoff places and in shaping the top half of the table.
