Lvi Prague B won the most dramatic match of the 1. liga round, edging MFF Prague 3-2 in a five-set thriller. The home side took the match 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12 after nearly two hours of intense volleyball, with the deciding set finally separating two teams who matched each other for long stretches.

A match of momentum swings

Lvi Prague B started the stronger of the two sides, using their home crowd and an aggressive serve to take the opening set 25-22. MFF Prague responded well in the second set, improving their reception and finding success through the middle. They levelled the match with a 25-21 win and looked the more settled team for a spell.

The third set was crucial. Lvi Prague B regained the initiative with a strong serving run in the middle of the set, but MFF Prague fought back to level at 23-23. The home side held their nerve in the closing rallies to take it 25-23 and move within a set of victory. MFF Prague, however, refused to go away. They produced their best volleyball of the match in the fourth set, winning 25-20 to force a decider.

Set-by-set breakdown

• Second set, 21-25: MFF Prague improved their first contact and levelled the match.
• Third set, 25-23: A tight set decided by Lvi Prague B’s composure in the final rallies.
• Fourth set, 20-25: MFF Prague raised their level again, forcing a fifth set.
• Fifth set, 15-12: Lvi Prague B found the decisive points late to seal the win.

The deciding set

The fifth set was everything a 1. liga tiebreak should be: tense, error-strewn at times, but full of brave attacking. MFF Prague took an early 4-2 lead, but Lvi Prague B responded with a run of points from the service line to move ahead 8-5 at the change of ends. MFF Prague clawed back to 10-10, but the home side found two crucial blocks and a well-executed transition attack to move to 14-11. A final serving error from MFF Prague ended the contest at 15-12.

Lvi Prague B’s ability to reset after losing the fourth set was impressive. In the deciding set, their setter simplified the attack and went to the hot hand, while the block remained disciplined under pressure. MFF Prague will feel they had chances, especially after levelling at 10-10, but they could not produce the same quality in the final few rallies.

Standout players and tactical story

Lvi Prague B’s opposite hitter was the match’s top scorer, carrying a heavy load in the decisive moments and delivering from both the front and back court. Their middle blockers also came up big in the fifth set, producing key blocks that changed the momentum. The libero was busy throughout and kept several difficult balls alive in long rallies.

For MFF Prague, the outside hitters caused problems for Lvi Prague B’s block for much of the night, and the setter did well to keep the attack varied. Their fourth-set performance showed what they are capable of when reception holds. In the end, though, the team’s error count in the fifth set proved costly.

1. liga table impact

The 3-2 win gives Lvi Prague B two points and a valuable home victory in the Czech 1. liga standings. In a match that could have gone either way, the home side’s composure in the fifth set made the difference. It is the kind of result that can build belief over the course of a season.

MFF Prague leave with a point but will feel frustrated after pushing the match to a decider. Their performance showed they can compete with strong opposition in 1. liga, but they will need to be more clinical in the closing stages of tight sets. Lvi Prague B, meanwhile, will take confidence from winning a five-set battle in front of their home supporters.
