Imielin Women Edge Szczyrk in Five-Set Thriller in I. Liga Women

SMS PZPS Szczyrk Women and Imielin Women delivered the classic of the round in I. Liga Women, with Imielin recovering from a set down twice before clinching a 3-2 road win (22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12). The match lasted nearly two hours of playing time, swung on fine margins in the fifth set, and gave the visitors two valuable points away from home.

For Szczyrk — one of Poland's most recognisable development sides, built around the country's top young volleyball talent — it was a frustrating night in which the quality of their volleyball was rarely matched by consistency in the closing stages of sets.

Match Overview

• Competition: I. Liga Women (Polish women's volleyball, second tier)
• Result: SMS PZPS Szczyrk Women 2–3 Imielin Women
• Set scores: 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 12-15
• Format: Best-of-five sets, tie-break to 15 points

The pattern of the match was set early: Szczyrk played the cleaner volleyball in the opening exchanges, Imielin grew stronger as each set progressed, and the deciding tie-break became a test of nerve rather than talent.

Key Moments

Szczyrk took the first set 25-22 with a strong blocking performance and a run of well-executed quick attacks through the middle. Imielin answered immediately, taking a tight second set 25-23 after saving a set point with a back-row attack that just dropped inside the sideline.

The third set was the hosts' best stretch of the match — a 25-20 win built on a five-point serving run that briefly looked like it might break the visitors' resistance. But Imielin responded with their most disciplined set of the night in the fourth, controlling the reception line and forcing a tie-break with a 25-21 win.

In the fifth, Imielin raced to a 7-3 lead at the change of ends and held their nerve down the stretch, closing out 15-12 on their first match point when a Szczyrk attack sailed long.

Tactical Story

The match turned on two things: Imielin's serve-receive adjustments after the third set and their willingness to keep attacking through the middle even when the block was waiting. Szczyrk's defensive system, excellent in sets one and three, became stretched as Imielin began varying the tempo of their first-ball attack.

Szczyrk's own serving was a weapon for much of the night, generating free points and disrupting Imielin's side-out rhythm. But in the fourth and fifth sets, the error count crept up, and those missed serves handed the visitors exactly the momentum they needed in a match decided by a handful of rallies.

Standout Performances

Imielin's opposite hitter was the outstanding attacking force of the night, repeatedly scoring out of system when the set was at its most congested. Their libero also deserves credit for a series of difficult defensive pickups in the tie-break that kept rallies alive long enough for the block to close.

For Szczyrk, the middle blockers were the team's most consistent performers, combining for a strong block count and providing a reliable scoring outlet on quick sets. The young outside hitters showed flashes of real quality — particularly in the third set — but were asked to carry a heavy load in the decisive rallies.

Table Impact and What's Next

Two points on the road in a five-setter is a solid return for Imielin, who will see this as evidence that they can compete with the strongest squads in I. Liga Women. Szczyrk, who took one point from the defeat, will be frustrated to have let a 2-1 lead slip at home, but their performance over the first three sets underlined why they remain one of the more watchable sides in the division.

Both teams now head into the next round with clear priorities: Imielin to consolidate their early-season momentum, and Szczyrk to tighten up their closing sets before the fixture list gets crowded.
