Halkbank won the Ankara derby in dramatic fashion on Saturday, edging Spor Toto 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13) in a five-set Efeler Ligi battle. The visitors’ experience and composure in the tie-break proved decisive, but Spor Toto pushed their city rivals all the way in a match that had the intensity of a much later-stage encounter.

Match overview

Spor Toto made the brighter start, taking the first set with energetic attacking and a strong block. Halkbank responded immediately, controlling the second and third sets with better serve-receive and a more varied offence. Spor Toto refused to fade, producing a determined fourth-set performance to force a decider. In the fifth, the teams traded points until Halkbank found the extra edge in the closing rallies.

The derby delivered everything expected from two Ankara sides with plenty of pride at stake: long rallies, sharp serving and a tense finish that kept the crowd engaged until the final point.

Key moments

• Halkbank’s mid-match control: After losing the opener, Halkbank tightened its block and slowed Spor Toto’s outside attack, taking the next two sets.
• Spor Toto’s fourth-set fightback: The home side raised its serving pressure and forced Halkbank into errors, keeping the match alive.
• Tie-break poise: At 13-13 in the fifth, Halkbank produced a key block and a well-placed serve to create match point before sealing the win.

Tactical story

Halkbank’s victory was built on patience. After a shaky first set, the visitors improved their reception and began to run a more balanced attack, involving the middle blockers and keeping Spor Toto’s defence moving. Their block-defence coordination also improved, allowing them to neutralize Spor Toto’s most dangerous hitters for long stretches in the second and third sets.

Spor Toto’s response in the fourth set was impressive. Their serve became more aggressive, and the home side found success by attacking into the seams of Halkbank’s block. The fifth set was a chess match of side-outs and small errors, and Halkbank’s ability to stay calm in the biggest rallies made the difference.

Standout performers

Halkbank’s opposite hitter delivered several crucial points, especially in the tie-break, while the team’s libero helped settle the reception under pressure. The visiting setter also deserves credit for keeping Halkbank’s offence unpredictable. Spor Toto’s outside hitter was the standout for the home side, carrying the attack in the fourth set and keeping the derby alive, while the home middle blocker produced important stops at the net.

Season impact

The win gives Halkbank important momentum in the Efeler Ligi standings and reinforces their credentials as a side capable of winning tight matches away from home. Spor Toto take a point from the derby but will be frustrated by letting a 1-0 lead slip and by falling just short in the fifth. The result adds another memorable chapter to the Ankara rivalry and keeps both teams focused on the long race ahead.

Halkbank will look to build on the tie-break composure, while Spor Toto will take encouragement from their fighting spirit and the quality of their fourth-set response.
