Gebze produced a strong comeback to beat Onikisubat 3-1 in Efeler Ligi on 17 October 2026, winning 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21. Onikisubat took the opening set, but Gebze responded with three consecutive set wins to secure a valuable away victory in the Turkish top flight.

Match overview

Onikisubat started the match with purpose and took a tight first set 25-22, using the energy of the home crowd to edge the key points. Gebze, however, did not allow that setback to affect their structure. The visitors levelled the match with a 25-22 second-set win, then took control in the third, winning 25-20. The fourth set was closer, but Gebze stayed composed down the stretch and closed it 25-21 to complete a 3-1 victory.

The result reflects Gebze’s ability to adapt after a difficult opening set. Once their serve and block settled, they looked the more balanced team, while Onikisubat struggled to maintain the attacking efficiency that had carried them through the first set.

Key moments

• First set: Onikisubat won the crucial points late in a tight opener, taking it 25-22 and giving the home crowd hope.
• Second set: Gebze responded immediately, improving their serve pressure and winning 25-22 to level the match.
• Third set: The visitors built a lead in the middle phase and managed it well, closing the set 25-20.
• Fourth set: Onikisubat stayed close, but Gebze found the better attacking solutions in the final rallies and sealed the match 25-21.

Tactical story

Gebze’s adjustment after the first set was the turning point. The visitors increased their service aggression, making it harder for Onikisubat to play through the middle. That allowed Gebze’s block to take away some of the home side’s favourite angles and forced Onikisubat into more predictable high-ball attacks.

Onikisubat’s first-set success came from a good balance between power and patience. They served well enough to keep Gebze out of rhythm and attacked with conviction in transition. But as the match progressed, their reception became less stable and their error count rose. Gebze, by contrast, grew more confident. Their setter used the middle effectively to keep the home block honest, and their defence handled the pressure in the fourth set.

Standout performers

Gebze’s opposite hitter was the team’s most reliable point-scorer, particularly in the second and third sets when the visitors needed to establish control. The outside hitters also contributed important kills in transition, while the libero helped stabilise the backcourt. For Onikisubat, the captain led the early charge and the middle blockers had good moments, but the home side could not sustain their first-set level over four sets.

What the result means

The 3-1 win gives Gebze three points and an important away result in the Efeler Ligi standings. Recovering from a first-set loss to win the next three shows the kind of resilience that matters in a long league season. Onikisubat will be frustrated to have let the match slip after a promising start, but the performance also showed that they can compete at this level. The key for them is to maintain their serving and sideout standards when the momentum shifts.
