Istanbul BB edged city rivals Sultanbeyli 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13) in a tense Efeler Ligi encounter on Saturday night. The home side held their nerve in a tight tie-break to claim two points, but Sultanbeyli’s resilience turned the match into a far tougher contest than the early sets suggested.

Match overview

Istanbul BB took a close opening set, only for Sultanbeyli to respond in the second with improved serving and a more aggressive attacking approach. The home side regained the lead in the third, but Sultanbeyli forced a decider with a strong fourth-set performance. In the fifth, neither team could create a decisive gap until Istanbul BB produced the key block and transition point at 14-13.

The match was a useful reminder of how little separates teams in the Efeler Ligi when serving and reception levels fluctuate. Istanbul BB had the better individual quality in the decisive moments, while Sultanbeyli’s collective fight kept the contest alive.

Key moments

• First-set finish: Istanbul BB held their nerve at 23-23, scoring through the middle before a Sultanbeyli error handed them the opener.
• Sultanbeyli’s second-set response: The visitors increased their service pressure and found success from the wings, leveling the match.
• Fifth-set block: At 13-13, Istanbul BB’s block produced the decisive touch, and the home side converted the following transition point to seal the win.

Tactical story

Istanbul BB’s offence was at its best when the setter could involve the middle and create movement along the net. In the first and third sets, that variety kept Sultanbeyli’s block guessing and opened space for the outside hitters. The home side’s serve also improved in the key moments, making it harder for Sultanbeyli to run a clean first-tempo attack.

Sultanbeyli’s strength was their resilience in defence. Their libero kept several difficult rallies alive, and the team’s outside hitters took on a heavy workload. The visitors’ fourth-set surge came from a combination of aggressive serving and better block positioning, but they could not repeat that level consistently in the tie-break.

Standout performers

Istanbul BB’s opposite hitter delivered the big points in the closing stages, while the home middle blocker made a crucial impact at the net in the fifth set. The team’s captain also provided steady leadership in reception and defence. Sultanbeyli’s libero was among the best players on the court, and their outside hitter produced a series of important kills to keep the visitors in contention.

Season impact

The win gives Istanbul BB two hard-earned points in the Efeler Ligi standings and maintains their positive home record. For Sultanbeyli, the narrow defeat is a frustrating result but also evidence that they can compete deep into matches against established city rivals. Both teams will take lessons from a contest decided by small margins, and the result adds another tight chapter to the Istanbul derby story in Turkish volleyball.

Istanbul BB will focus on maintaining their serving level for longer stretches, while Sultanbeyli will look to turn their defensive resilience into more consistent scoring in the next round.
