The second semifinal of the 2020 Copa del Rey turned into a stylish display of volleyball as Voleibol Teruel swept past Grau in three sets on February 9, 2020. The 3-0 result carried Teruel into the final with confidence and sent a clear signal to their next opponents: they were in prime form when it mattered most.

Match Overview

With a place in the final at stake, Teruel played a controlled and disciplined match from the very first rally. They used their imposing vertical block to shut down Grau’s best attacks and remained patient in side-out situations, rarely allowing Grau to take the lead or build any sustained momentum.

Grau, who had fought through a taxing five-set quarterfinal the previous day, did not go quietly. They continued to battle for every point, and their defensive coverage earned prolonged applause from the crowd. Yet Teruel’s superior execution in the crucial phases of each set proved too much to overcome.

Teruel's Dominant Spikes

Teruel’s attacking distribution kept Grau guessing all evening. The setter mixed short balls to the middle with sets to the outside, creating one-on-one situations for the hitters. That tactical variety paid dividends, allowing Teruel to convert rallies at a markedly higher rate than their opponents.

On the defensive side, Teruel’s libero read Grau’s attacks exceptionally well, consistently turning hard-driven balls into clean receptions. That freed the setter to play at a high tempo and prevented Grau from establishing any rhythm at the service line.

Momentum Towards the Final

For Teruel, the sweep was about more than just reaching the final. It proved that they could handle a high-pressure match without being dragged into a long, physical war. That efficiency gave them an edge as they prepared for the showpiece match against Almería, where they would go on to lift the title in a five-set classic.

Gua's exit, while disappointing, was marked by a spirited campaign. They had already won a five-set quarterfinal against a tough opponent, and their semifinal performance offered evidence of a resilient squad with plenty of future potential in Spanish volleyball.
