Avarca de Menorca Women opened their Challenge Cup Women campaign with a solid 3-1 victory over Kaunas Women on 29 October 2026, producing a composed performance that combined aggressive attacking with disciplined defence. The Spanish side dropped a tight second set but responded strongly to close out the match in four.

Match overview

Avarca de Menorca, a club with a growing reputation in Spanish volleyball, went into the tie as favourites and justified that status with a controlled display. The home side started brightly, moving the ball quickly and using their middle attack to stretch the Kaunas block. The Lithuanian side responded well in the second set, raising their serving intensity and forcing errors, but they could not sustain that level across the match.

From the third set onwards, Menorca reasserted control. Their block tightened, their floor defence improved, and their attacking decisions became sharper as the match wore on. It was a professional European performance built on solid fundamentals rather than spectacular moments.

Key moments

The opening set established the home side's rhythm, with Menorca building an early lead and holding it comfortably. Kaunas responded impressively in the second, taking advantage of a dip in the Spanish side's reception and winning the key points at the end of the set.

• Menorca's response in the third set was immediate and decisive, with a strong serving run creating an early cushion.
• Kaunas pushed hard midway through the fourth set, but a sequence of crucial blocks from the home side ended their resistance.
• Menorca's setter managed the closing stages well, keeping the offence balanced and avoiding predictable patterns.

Tactical story

The match turned on Menorca's ability to control the middle of the court. Their block was well organised, and their defensive positioning allowed them to convert a high proportion of block touches into counter-attacking opportunities. Kaunas, by contrast, relied heavily on their outside hitters, and when their reception deteriorated, their attack became too easy to read.

Menorca's serve was another key factor. They mixed short serves with deep drives to disrupt Kaunas's passing rhythm, particularly in the third and fourth sets. That pressure translated into free points and comfortable side-outs, allowing the Spanish side to play with a freedom that their opponents never quite enjoyed.

Standout performers

Menorca's opposite hitter was the most consistent attacking threat on the night, scoring heavily in the decisive sets. Their middle blockers also made a significant impact at the net, while the libero produced a series of important defensive plays in the fourth set. For Kaunas, the captain led by example with a determined performance, and the setter showed good creativity despite the difficult passing situations.

What it means

The result gives Avarca de Menorca a healthy advantage heading into the second leg of the tie, and it underlines their potential to make an impact in the Challenge Cup Women this season. The coaching staff will be particularly pleased with the team's response after losing the second set — a sign of maturity in a competition where momentum can change quickly.

Kaunas leave with a defeat but with useful lessons. Their second-set performance showed that they can compete when their serve lands, and they will need to reproduce that level for longer periods in the return fixture if they are to overturn the deficit.
