Benfica Power Past Mamede with Dominant 3-0 Display

Benfica delivered a convincing 3-0 victory over Mamede in the Campeonato Nacional on 25 October 2026, winning 25-14, 25-17, 25-19. The hosts controlled the match from start to finish, combining aggressive serving with a strong block and a varied attacking game.

The result keeps Benfica on the front foot in the league and hands Mamede a difficult evening in which they struggled to contain the hosts’ pace. Benfica’s ability to score in bunches proved decisive, particularly in the first two sets.

Match Overview

Benfica made a fast start, racing to an 11-4 lead in the opening set. Their serving was immediately effective, forcing Mamede into awkward first contacts and limiting their attacking options. Gonçalo Sousa and Vasco Pereira led the charge at the net, and Benfica closed the first set with ease at 25-14.

The second set was more competitive early, with Mamede briefly leveling at 8-8. Benfica responded with a 7-1 run, sparked by three aces from Sousa. Mamede never recovered, and the hosts took a two-set lead. The third set saw Benfica rotate their squad, but the level barely dropped. Mamede improved their fight and reached 15-13, only for Benfica to pull away again behind strong serving and efficient transition play.

Key Moments

• First set, 8-4 Benfica: A serving run from Pereira forced an early Mamede timeout.
• Second set, 9-8 Benfica: Sousa’s three aces in four serves broke the set open.
• Third set, 16-14 Benfica: A block from substitute middle blocker André Lopes halted Mamede’s best spell of the match.

Tactical Story

Benfica’s serving strategy was clear and effective: pressure Mamede’s outside hitters and force the setter to use predictable options. That approach allowed the hosts’ block to set up early, and Benfica repeatedly turned defense into quick points. Setter João Neves controlled the tempo well, mixing quick middle attacks with high balls to the pins.

Mamede had no answer for Benfica’s length at the net. Their reception was frequently pushed off target, and their attack became too reliant on individual efforts. Defensively, Mamede also struggled to contain Benfica’s varied angles, particularly when the hosts used their middle to pull the block apart.

Standout Players

Gonçalo Sousa led all scorers with 17 points, including five aces, and was the standout performer of the night. Vasco Pereira added 12 points and three blocks, while João Neves finished with 30 assists. For Mamede, Rui Almeida top-scored with 10 points and showed fight in the third set, but the visitors lacked the consistency to threaten a bigger upset.

Table and Season Impact

The 3-0 win gives Benfica three points and reinforces their position in the Campeonato Nacional standings. A victory built on serving, blocking, and squad depth is particularly encouraging as the season progresses. Mamede, meanwhile, will need to improve their first contact and attacking balance after a night in which they were often forced onto the back foot.

Benfica now turn their attention to their next league fixture with confidence high, while Mamede must regroup quickly. In the Campeonato Nacional, the difference between a competitive set and a heavy defeat often comes down to serve-receive, and that was the defining area of this match.
