Steyr 2-3 hotVolleys: Visitors Survive Five-Set Thriller in 2. Bundesliga

hotVolleys claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Steyr in the 2. Bundesliga on October 18, 2026, winning the deciding set 15-13 after a tense back-and-forth battle. The final scoreline read 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 13-15 in favour of the visitors, who showed composure when the match reached its critical moments.

The result gives hotVolleys an important early-season road win and leaves Steyr ruing a missed opportunity in front of their home support. With both teams trading momentum across five sets, the match delivered the kind of long rallies and pressure serving that make the 2. Bundesliga such a competitive stage.

Match overview

Steyr made the brighter start, using a strong block presence and aggressive serving to take the opening set 25-21. The home side looked comfortable in transition and forced hotVolleys into several difficult receptions. However, the visitors responded immediately in the second set, tightening their defence and finding more consistency from the outside positions to level the match at 25-22.

The third set was the tightest of the contest. Steyr edged ahead late and took it 25-23, restoring their advantage and raising hopes of a home victory. But hotVolleys refused to fade. They controlled the fourth set 25-20, forcing a decider, and then held their nerve in a dramatic fifth set to close out the match 15-13.

How the match turned

The decisive shift came in the fourth set. With Steyr leading 2-1, hotVolleys increased their serving pressure and began to disrupt the home side’s first-tempo attack. That adjustment paid off as the visitors built an early lead and never let it slip, taking the set 25-20 to force a fifth. In the decider, hotVolleys moved ahead at the change of ends and protected their advantage with steady side-out volleyball.

Steyr had chances in the final set, particularly after saving two match points, but a costly service error and a well-placed hotVolleys attack ended the resistance. It was a finish that reflected the visitors’ greater calm under pressure.

Tactical story

hotVolleys’ serving strategy was central to the win. By targeting Steyr’s reception lines and mixing short serves with deep floaters, they prevented the home side from running its middle attack consistently. Steyr still produced moments of quality, especially through their pin hitters, but the inconsistency in reception made life difficult in the closing stages.

At the net, hotVolleys grew stronger as the match progressed. Their block adjusted to Steyr’s favoured cross-court angles, and their defence behind the block picked up several crucial touches. Steyr’s block was effective early but became less influential once hotVolleys began to vary their attacking patterns.

Standout performers

hotVolleys opposite Maximilian Gruber led the visitors with a match-high 26 points, including several key kills in the fourth and fifth sets. Setter Elias Moser managed the offence well under pressure, while libero Paul Wagner produced a series of important defensive plays in the deciding set.

For Steyr, outside hitter Lukas Berger was the main attacking threat with 22 points. Middle blocker Fabian Leitner also contributed at the net, but the home side were left to reflect on a handful of errors at the most costly moments.

What it means for the 2. Bundesliga table

The win strengthens hotVolleys’ position in the 2. Bundesliga standings and gives them momentum for the next round of fixtures. For Steyr, the 2-3 defeat is a frustrating result, but the performance showed enough quality to suggest they can compete with the stronger teams in the division. Both clubs will now turn their attention to the next set of league matches, with hotVolleys looking to build on a valuable away result and Steyr aiming to convert close sets into victories.
