Dresden edged Muhldorf in a five-set thriller in the 2. Bundesliga South, winning 3-2 on Sunday to secure two valuable points in the race for promotion. The home side took the match 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12, surviving a determined fightback from Muhldorf to close out the contest in the deciding set.

Match overview

Dresden started brightly in front of their home crowd, using aggressive serving to disrupt Muhldorf’s reception and build a narrow lead in the opening set. The hosts held their nerve late to take it 25-22, but Muhldorf responded in the second with better block defence and a more patient attacking approach, levelling the match at 1-1.

The momentum continued to swing. Dresden reclaimed the advantage with a composed 25-20 third set, only for Muhldorf to force a decider by taking the fourth 25-22. In the fifth, Dresden’s experience and serving pressure told as they pulled away in the closing points to seal a 15-12 victory.

Key moments

• First set: Dresden’s serving run midway through the set created the separation needed to take it 25-22.
• Second set: Muhldorf improved their block and transition game to level the match, winning 25-23.
• Third set: Dresden regained control with a 25-20 win, helped by strong defensive play at the net.
• Fourth set: Muhldorf refused to fade, forcing a fifth set with a 25-22 success.
• Deciding set: Dresden edged ahead early and closed it out 15-12 under pressure.

Tactical story

The match was decided by serve and reception. Dresden’s willingness to take risks from the service line paid off in the crucial moments, especially in the fifth set, where Muhldorf’s first-contact quality dropped. Muhldorf, meanwhile, were effective when they kept the ball in play and used their middle blockers, but they struggled to sustain that control across five sets.

Standout performers

Dresden’s outside attackers carried a heavy load, particularly in the decisive set, while their libero produced several important defensive plays to keep rallies alive. For Muhldorf, the opposite hitter was a consistent outlet and kept the visitors in the match with timely points in the second and fourth sets.

Season impact

The 3-2 win gives Dresden a useful boost in the 2. Bundesliga South standings, keeping them in touch with the leading group. Muhldorf leave with a losing bonus point from a match in which they showed real resilience, but they will rue a handful of errors in the closing stages of the fifth set.
