Kaunas Women produced the road performance of the round in the Balti Liiga Women, defeating Riga VS Women 3-1 on October 11, 2026. The Lithuanian side dropped a tightly contested second set but controlled the other three, closing out the match with the kind of composed end-game execution that travelling teams often struggle to find.

Match Overview

The set scores — 22-25, 25-20, 19-25, 23-25 — show a match that was never a blowout but was consistently edged by the visitors. Riga VS started brightly in front of their home supporters and levelled the match at one set apiece, only for Kaunas to reassert control with a dominant third set and then hold off a late Riga surge in the fourth.

Key Moments

• First set: Kaunas broke away from 19-19 with a three-point serving run that forced Riga into two difficult out-of-system attacks.
• Second set: Riga VS responded superbly, using a strong blocking stretch to build a 16-11 cushion they never surrendered.
• Third set: The decisive passage of the match. Kaunas raced to 12-6 and kept the pressure on, limiting Riga to under twenty points.
• Fourth set: Riga saved two match points and closed to 23-24, but Kaunas found a clean kill on the outside to finish it.

Tactical Story

The Balti Liiga is a competition built on contrast — Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian sides with different styles and different levels of depth — and this match was a textbook example. Riga VS played fast, high-tempo volleyball with quick middle attacks whenever reception allowed. Kaunas preferred a more physical approach, loading up their wings and leaning on a patient block that grew stronger as the match progressed.

The turning point was Kaunas's adjustment at the net after the second set. By shading their block toward Riga's most productive hitter, they reduced the home side's clean attacking options and forced longer rallies. In those rallies, Kaunas's ball control and floor defence were the difference, and their serving in the third set was the most disruptive passage of the night.

Standout Performers

Kaunas's opposite hitter was the match's most consistent scorer, delivering in all four sets and carrying the team through the tense closing stages. Their libero also had a strong evening, repeatedly extending rallies that Riga had seemingly already won. For Riga VS, the middle blockers were excellent in the second set and the setter kept the offence varied, but the team's error count rose sharply whenever the passing broke down.

Season Impact

Winning away in the Balti Liiga is worth more than the two points on the board — it sets a tone for the campaign. Kaunas leave with momentum and a proven road formula, while Riga VS are left to reflect on a match they competed in for long stretches but could not finish. Closing sets, particularly the fourth, is the detail that separates contenders from the pack in this competition.

What's Next

Both clubs continue their Baltic schedules with little time to recover. Kaunas will want to reproduce this level of serving and blocking away from home again, while Riga VS will focus on converting strong blocking spells into sustained scoreboard advantage.
