Mwembe Makumbi City FC edged a five-goal thriller on 28 October 2026, defeating Chipukizi FC 2-1 in the Zanzibar Premier League. The hosts produced a composed, clinical display in front of their own supporters, claiming all three points in a match that swung back and forth before the decisive moment arrived.

Match overview

With the Zanzibar Premier League table tightening as the season wore on, both sides arrived at this fixture knowing the value of the points on offer. Mwembe Makumbi City FC, playing at home, looked the more settled side in the early stages, dictating the tempo and probing for openings down the flanks.

Chipukizi FC were not content to sit back, though, and their willingness to push forward made for an open, entertaining contest. The two-goal tally for the hosts was matched by a spirited response from the visitors, whose equaliser set up a tense finish.

Key moments

• Opening goal: Mwembe Makumbi City broke the deadlock with a well-worked move that unlocked the Chipukizi defence.
• Chipukizi response: The visitors hit back to level the scores, capitalising on a spell of pressure and briefly silencing the home crowd.
• Winner: Mwembe Makumbi City regained the lead with the decisive goal, converting their best chance of the second period.
• Late resistance: Chipukizi pushed for a second equaliser, but the home defence held firm to protect the result.

Tactical story

Mwembe Makumbi City's victory was built on a balanced approach: patient enough in possession to control spells of the game, yet direct enough to threaten whenever the opportunity arose. Their wide players provided consistent width, stretching Chipukizi's back line and creating the spaces through which the winning goal eventually arrived.

Chipukizi FC showed plenty of fighting spirit and could point to promising spells of their own, particularly during the phase in which they equalised. However, they struggled to maintain that intensity and were punished for losing concentration at a crucial moment. Their pressing, effective early on, faded as legs tired in the closing half-hour.

Standout performers

The Mwembe Makumbi City midfield was the heartbeat of the performance, combining energy with quality on the ball and linking defence to attack intelligently. The forwards deserve credit for their movement and clinical finishing, and the goalkeeper came up with important interventions late on to protect the lead.

For Chipukizi FC, the goalscorer was their brightest spark, and their captain led by example in the centre of the pitch. The team's defensive unit battled hard, but the second goal proved the difference on the night.

League impact

The win strengthens Mwembe Makumbi City's position in the Zanzibar Premier League standings and gives their supporters renewed belief that a strong run is possible. Chipukizi FC, meanwhile, will reflect on a performance with positives but no points to show for it, and will look to tighten up defensively in their next outing.
