The Zanzibar Premier League produced a tight, tactical stalemate on 28 September 2026 as Mafunzo FC and Mwembe Makumbi City FC played out a 0-0 draw at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City. On a night when both sides arrived needing points for very different reasons, it was the defences and the goalkeepers who took the honours, leaving a share of the spoils that felt simultaneously satisfying and frustrating for each camp.

Match Overview

Mafunzo, traditionally one of the more established names in Zanzibari football, went into the fixture looking to make home advantage count and climb the standings. Mwembe Makumbi City, travelling from Pemba, set up with a compact shape designed to frustrate and counter, and that plan worked almost to perfection across 90 absorbing minutes.

The game finished goalless, but it was far from a dull affair. There were chances at both ends, a handful of nervy moments in each penalty area, and a final 15 minutes in which the hosts pushed hard for the winner while their opponents defended with real discipline and no small amount of courage.

How the Game Unfolded

Mafunzo started the brighter of the two teams, dominating possession in the opening half hour and forcing Mwembe Makumbi City deep into their own half. The hosts looked to work the ball into wide areas and deliver early crosses, testing a visiting back line that stood firm and cleared its lines efficiently.

Mwembe Makumbi City grew into the contest as the first half wore on. Their midfield began to win second balls and spring quick transitions, and twice before the interval they carved out shooting opportunities from distance that forced smart saves from the Mafunzo goalkeeper.

After the break, the pattern shifted again. Mafunzo pushed their full-backs higher, committed more bodies forward and pinned the visitors back for long spells. The final quarter of the match was played almost entirely in Mwembe Makumbi City's half, but a combination of last-ditch blocks, an inspired goalkeeping display and some wasteful finishing kept the scoreboard untouched.

Key Moments

• Early pressure: Mafunzo's best spell came in the first 25 minutes, with two corners in quick succession causing panic in the visiting defence before the ball was scrambled clear.
• Goalkeeping heroics: Both keepers were called into action in the second half, with the Mwembe Makumbi City shot-stopper producing the save of the match to deny a close-range effort after a well-worked move down the left.
• Late push: Mafunzo threw bodies forward in the closing stages, but a goal-line clearance and a shot that flashed just wide of the far post summed up their night.
• Discipline holds: Mwembe Makumbi City absorbed wave after wave of pressure without losing their shape, managing the closing minutes calmly.

Tactical Story

The contest was essentially a battle between Mafunzo's patient build-up play and Mwembe Makumbi City's well-organised low block. Mafunzo wanted to stretch the pitch, using width to isolate defenders and deliver crosses into the box. Their opponents, by contrast, kept their lines tight, defended the central corridor first and looked to break at speed through the channels.

Where Mafunzo will feel they fell short was in the final third. Their approach play was neat and their territorial dominance clear, but the decisive pass or the clinical finish eluded them. Mwembe Makumbi City, meanwhile, executed their game plan almost exactly as intended and will regard a clean sheet away from home as a point well earned.

Standout Performers

Both goalkeepers deserve the bulk of the credit. Mafunzo's number one was alert to the counter-attacking threat and handled crosses confidently, while his opposite number produced the game's outstanding individual moment with a reflex save late on. In front of them, the two central defensive pairings stood tall, winning headers and making timely interceptions in a match that demanded concentration for the full 90 minutes.

In midfield, Mafunzo's deeper playmaker saw plenty of the ball and dictated the tempo for long periods, while Mwembe Makumbi City's engine room impressed with their work rate, pressing triggers and willingness to carry the ball forward under pressure.

What the Draw Means

A single point keeps both clubs moving in the right direction, though each will view it differently. For Mafunzo, dropping points at home in a fixture they largely controlled is a reminder that dominance without penetration costs places in the table. For Mwembe Makumbi City, an away clean sheet against a strong opponent is exactly the kind of result that builds momentum over a long Zanzibar Premier League season.
