Makeni All Stars 0-0 Kansanshi Dynamos: Defences Hold Firm in Zambia Super League Stalemate

Makeni All Stars and Kansanshi Dynamos played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw in the Zambia Super League on Sunday, 4 October 2026. In a contest short on clear-cut chances but high on intensity, both defences came out on top, and the two goalkeepers produced the decisive performances of the evening.

Kansanshi Dynamos enjoyed more possession and created the better openings, but Makeni All Stars defended with discipline and nearly snatched a late winner. The point keeps Makeni’s fight for survival alive, while Kansanshi will feel they missed an opportunity to close the gap on the top four.

Match Overview

Played at Makeni’s home ground, the match began with Kansanshi Dynamos dictating tempo. The visitors moved the ball patiently through midfield, looking to draw Makeni out of their defensive shape. Makeni, organised in a compact 4-2-3-1, were happy to concede possession in harmless areas and strike on the counter.

The first half produced few clear chances. Kansanshi’s best moments came from set pieces, while Makeni threatened twice on the break. The second half opened up slightly, but both defences remained alert to the danger, and the final whistle brought a deserved share of the points.

Key Moments

• 11th minute: Kansanshi won a free-kick in a dangerous position, but the effort was pushed away by Makeni goalkeeper Francis Mwansa.
• 28th minute: Makeni’s first real chance came on the counter. Emmanuel Banda raced clear but dragged his shot wide of the far post.
• 45+2nd minute: Kansanshi thought they had taken the lead from a header, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
• 57th minute: Mwansa produced a double save, first blocking a close-range effort and then reacting quickly to smother the rebound.
• 72nd minute: Makeni’s Emmanuel Banda headed over from a promising corner.
• 84th minute: Kansanshi’s Joseph Phiri forced another save, with Mwansa tipping his shot over the bar.
• 90+3rd minute: A late Makeni free-kick deflected narrowly wide as the hosts pushed for a winner.

Tactical Story

Kansanshi Dynamos tried to build patiently, using their full-backs to stretch Makeni’s midfield. But Makeni’s defensive block held firm. The centre-back pair of Chanda Mwale and Peter Zulu dealt well with crosses, while midfielder John Sakala screened the space in front of the defence.

Makeni’s game plan was clear: stay compact, win second balls and attack quickly through Emmanuel Banda. It nearly worked. The hosts had fewer shots but arguably the more dangerous transitions, especially in the final 20 minutes when Kansanshi pushed more players forward.

Kansanshi’s inability to convert possession into clear chances will concern their coaching staff. They dominated the ball but struggled to break down a low block. The best teams in the Zambia Super League find ways to create from wide areas and set pieces, and Kansanshi will need more variety in the coming weeks.

Standout Players

Francis Mwansa was the clear man of the match. His double save in the 57th minute preserved the clean sheet and gave Makeni the platform to earn a point. Defenders Chanda Mwale and Peter Zulu were also excellent, winning headers and blocking shots.

For Kansanshi Dynamos, goalkeeper Kelvin Banda was equally impressive when called upon, and Joseph Phiri carried the main attacking threat. John Sakala worked tirelessly in midfield for Makeni, breaking up play and starting counters.

Zambia Super League Table Impact

The draw gives Makeni All Stars a valuable point in their battle to move away from the lower reaches of the Zambia Super League table. Clean sheets are precious for teams fighting for survival, and this performance will boost confidence.

Kansanshi Dynamos remain in the chasing pack, but dropping points against a side below them is a missed opportunity. With the Zambia Super League season progressing, they will need to turn possession into goals if they are to challenge for a top-four finish.
