Green Eagles earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Roan United in the Zambia Super League on Saturday, with Chanda Mwape’s second-half goal proving the difference. A tight, cagey contest at Independence Stadium was settled by one moment of quality, and Green Eagles’ defence made it count with a disciplined clean sheet.

Mwape strikes to give Green Eagles home win

Both sides struggled to find rhythm in a first half short on clear-cut chances. Green Eagles saw more of the ball but found Roan United’s compact defensive block difficult to break down. Roan, for their part, looked dangerous on the counter and forced a couple of important saves before the interval.

The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute when Mwape found space inside the penalty area and finished with composure. From there, Green Eagles managed the game well, dropping deeper without surrendering control and limiting Roan’s access to dangerous areas.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Green Eagles created the first real opening, but Roan United’s goalkeeper made a strong save at the near post.
• 42nd minute: Roan United went close on the counter, only for a last-ditch defensive challenge to deny them.
• 63rd minute: Chanda Mwape scored the only goal, finishing calmly after a patient build-up from the home side.
• 84th minute: Green Eagles’ goalkeeper produced a crucial save to preserve the lead as Roan pushed for an equaliser.

Tactical story

Green Eagles controlled possession for long stretches but had to be patient against a Roan United side that defended narrow and forced play into wide areas. The home side’s best moments came when their midfielders combined quickly on the edge of the box, drawing defenders out of position before slipping a runner through.

After taking the lead, Green Eagles showed game management rather than chasing a second goal recklessly. They protected the central corridor, cleared crosses effectively and relied on their goalkeeper when Roan’s late pressure created a rare clear chance. It was not a vintage attacking display, but it was an efficient one.

Standout performers

Mwape’s goal was the decisive contribution, and his movement in the second half gave Green Eagles a focal point in attack. The goalkeeper also deserves credit for a late save that protected all three points. For Roan United, the central defenders produced a committed display for much of the match, but their attacking players lacked the final touch on a difficult away night.

What it means

The win strengthens Green Eagles’ position in the Zambia Super League and reinforces their reputation as a side capable of grinding out narrow victories. Roan United will be disappointed to leave empty-handed after competing well for long periods, but they will need to find more creativity in the final third if they are to turn tight defeats into points.
