Green Buffaloes 2-0 Chirundu United: Buffaloes Secure Routine Zambia Super League Home Win

Green Buffaloes claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory over Chirundu United in the Zambia Super League on Sunday, 4 October 2026. Goals from Chanda Mwape and Patrick Gondwe either side of the interval gave the hosts a deserved win, and a solid defensive display ensured Chirundu United left Lusaka empty-handed.

The result keeps Green Buffaloes in a strong position in the Zambia Super League standings and reinforces their reputation as one of the most organized sides in the division. Chirundu United, meanwhile, remain in a difficult fight near the bottom of the table.

Match Overview

Green Buffaloes started on the front foot, pressing Chirundu United high and forcing early corners. The visitors set up in a deep 5-4-1, looking to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. But Buffaloes moved the ball quickly, switched play from side to side and created a steady flow of chances.

By the end of the match, Green Buffaloes had enjoyed 65% possession and registered 18 shots to Chirundu’s four. The hosts were especially dangerous from set pieces, and both goals came from periods of sustained pressure.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Green Buffaloes created the first clear opening, with a low drive from the edge of the box forcing a smart save from the Chirundu goalkeeper.
• 31st minute: The hosts took the lead. Chanda Mwape rose highest from a corner and powered a header into the net.
• 44th minute: Chirundu’s best chance of the half fell to Isaac Tembo, who dragged his shot wide after a rare break forward.
• 58th minute: Buffaloes nearly doubled the lead, but a curling effort struck the outside of the post.
• 74th minute: The second goal arrived. Patrick Gondwe collected the ball on the edge of the box, shifted onto his left foot and drove a low finish into the bottom corner.
• 90th minute: Green Buffaloes saw out the closing stages comfortably to record a clean sheet.

Tactical Story

Green Buffaloes controlled this match through midfield. Kelvin Mubanga dictated the tempo, dropping deep to collect the ball and linking defence with attack. The full-backs pushed high, stretching Chirundu United’s back five and creating space for the wingers to attack.

Chirundu United defended bravely for long periods, but their lack of possession made it difficult to relieve pressure. When they did win the ball, the isolation of their lone striker meant attacks often ended before they could develop. The visitors will need to find a way to support their centre-forward better in future Zambia Super League fixtures.

Green Buffaloes’ patience was impressive. They did not rush shots from distance, instead working the ball into wide areas and delivering crosses. Both goals were products of that disciplined approach, and the clean sheet was just reward for a focused defensive performance.

Standout Players

Chanda Mwape opened the scoring with a commanding header and was a threat throughout from set pieces. Patrick Gondwe added the second with a composed finish and linked play well in the final third. Midfielder Kelvin Mubanga controlled the rhythm of the game, while goalkeeper Charles Mweemba made one important save to preserve the shutout.

For Chirundu United, goalkeeper Martin Sakala made several saves to prevent a heavier defeat. Isaac Tembo showed flashes on the counter, but the visitors lacked the final pass to truly trouble Green Buffaloes.

Zambia Super League Table Impact

The win strengthens Green Buffaloes’ position in the Zambia Super League table and keeps them firmly in the conversation for a high finish. Their goal difference also benefits from the two-goal margin, which could matter in a tight race for continental places or top-four positioning.

Chirundu United remain in trouble. The defeat leaves them searching for points and confidence, and their defensive resilience alone will not be enough if they cannot score more regularly. The Zambia Super League season is long, but every dropped point increases the pressure at the bottom.
