Sanfrecce Hiroshima Ease Past Tochigi City in YBC Levain Cup

Sanfrecce Hiroshima booked their place in the next round of the YBC Levain Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Tochigi City at a packed Tochigi City Stadium on September 29, 2026. The J1 outfit showed their superior quality and experience, scoring once in each half to see off a spirited challenge from their lower-division hosts.

The match, played under the floodlights in front of a lively crowd, was a classic cup tie between a top-flight side and a determined underdog. Tochigi City, known for their attacking flair in the J.League’s lower tiers, started brightly and pressed high, but Sanfrecce’s backline, marshalled by their veteran centre-back, held firm.

Match Overview

Hiroshima took control of possession from the opening whistle, patiently probing for gaps in Tochigi’s defensive block. The visitors’ midfield trio dictated the tempo, and it came as no surprise when they broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. A well-worked corner from the right was flicked on at the near post, and the Hiroshima striker powered a header into the roof of the net from six yards out.

Tochigi responded with vigour, and their best chance of the first half fell to their captain, who curled a shot just wide of the far post after a swift counter-attack. However, Hiroshima’s goalkeeper was rarely troubled, and the half-time scoreline reflected the visitors’ control.

Key Moments

• 23’ – Goal: Sanfrecce Hiroshima take the lead through a towering header from a corner kick.
• 41’ – Chance: Tochigi City’s forward forces a smart save from the Hiroshima goalkeeper with a low drive from the edge of the box.
• 67’ – Goal: Hiroshima double their advantage on the break, a slick passing move ending with a calm finish into the bottom corner.
• 82’ – Denied: Tochigi’s late surge almost yields a consolation, but a last-ditch block denies them a clear shot on goal.

Tactical Story

Sanfrecce Hiroshima set up in a fluid 4-2-3-1, with their full-backs pushing high to stretch Tochigi’s defence. The hosts, meanwhile, opted for a compact 5-4-1 when out of possession, looking to hit on the counter. The tactical battle was fascinating: Tochigi’s wing-backs worked tirelessly, but Hiroshima’s midfield superiority meant the home side struggled to maintain possession for long spells. The introduction of fresh legs from the bench for Hiroshima in the second half only increased their stranglehold on the game.

Standout Players

Hiroshima’s defensive midfielder was the engine room, breaking up play and recycling possession with metronomic efficiency. Up front, the goalscorers took their chances well. For Tochigi City, their goalkeeper produced a string of saves to keep the score respectable, while their captain was a constant threat with his direct running.

What It Means

The win sends Sanfrecce Hiroshima into the next round of the YBC Levain Cup, where they will face either a fellow J1 side or another lower-league giant-killer. For Tochigi City, the cup run ends, but their performance will give them confidence for the remainder of their league campaign. Hiroshima’s quest for a first Levain Cup title since 2022 remains on track.
