Gainare Tottori produced the shock of the YBC Levain Cup second round, defeating J1 side V-Varen Nagasaki 2-0 at the Tottori Bank Bird Stadium on September 29, 2026. The J3 outfit put in a heroic defensive display and took their chances clinically to secure a famous victory.

Few gave Tottori a chance against their higher-division opponents, but from the first whistle, the home side showed no fear. They defended as a unit, pressed intelligently, and struck twice in the second half to send their fans into delirium.

Nagasaki dominated possession in the opening exchanges, moving the ball quickly in an attempt to unlock the Tottori defence. But the hosts stood firm, with their goalkeeper making two smart saves to keep the scores level. As the first half wore on, Tottori grew in confidence and began to create chances of their own on the counter.

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when Tottori’s striker latched onto a long ball over the top and calmly rounded the goalkeeper to score. The goal stunned Nagasaki, and Tottori doubled their lead on 72 minutes with a well-placed header from a corner. Tactical Story

Gainare Tottori set up in a rigid 4-4-2, with two banks of four making it difficult for Nagasaki to play through the middle. Nagasaki, using a 4-2-3-1, struggled to find space between the lines and were forced into hopeful crosses. Tottori’s game plan was simple but executed perfectly: defend deep, win the second balls, and break with pace. The introduction of a fresh striker for Tottori in the second half added extra legs in the counter-attack, leading to the opening goal.

Standout Players

Tottori’s goalkeeper was the hero, making five saves including two outstanding stops. Their centre-back partnership was colossal, winning everything in the air. The goalscorers took their chances with aplomb. For Nagasaki, their playmaker tried to spark something, but he was well marshalled by Tottori’s midfield.

What It Means

This is one of the biggest upsets in recent Levain Cup history. Gainare Tottori move into the next round, where they will dream of another giant-killing. For V-Varen Nagasaki, it’s a demoralising exit, and they must regroup quickly for their J1 campaign. The result is a reminder that in cup football, anything can happen.
