Colwyn Bay 1-0 Haverfordwest County: Dylan Rees Strike Settles Tight Welsh Premier League Contest

Colwyn Bay claimed a narrow but valuable 1-0 victory over Haverfordwest County in the Welsh Premier League on Saturday, 26 September 2026. Dylan Rees scored the only goal of the game in the 64th minute, and a disciplined defensive display ensured the home side took all three points from a hard-fought 21:30 kick-off.

In a match short on clear chances but high on tactical discipline, Colwyn Bay’s patience and composure in the final third proved the difference. Haverfordwest County pressed well and defended in numbers, but they were ultimately undone by one moment of quality.

Match Overview

The first half was a cagey affair, with both teams prioritising structure over risk. Haverfordwest County sat deep at times, looking to frustrate Colwyn Bay and hit on the counter-attack. Colwyn Bay enjoyed more possession but struggled to break down a compact defensive block, managing only a handful of half-chances before the break.

The game opened up after half-time as Colwyn Bay pushed their midfield higher and increased the tempo of their passing. The breakthrough arrived in the 64th minute when Dylan Rees received the ball on the edge of the box, shifted it onto his stronger foot and curled a precise shot beyond the goalkeeper. It was a goal worthy of deciding any contest.

Haverfordwest County responded with their best spell of the match, forcing two corners and testing the Colwyn Bay defence with a series of crosses. The home goalkeeper made a smart save in the 78th minute, and a last-ditch block in the 86th preserved the clean sheet. Five minutes of stoppage time brought pressure but no equaliser.

Key Moments

• 18' – First warning: Colwyn Bay’s winger flashed a low cross across goal, but no teammate could apply the finishing touch.
• 64' – Goal, Colwyn Bay 1-0: Dylan Rees curled a composed finish into the far corner after a patient build-up.
• 72' – Haverfordwest response: A driven free-kick was headed narrowly over the crossbar as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
• 78' – Crucial save: Colwyn Bay’s goalkeeper reacted well to tip a close-range effort around the post.
• 86' – Last-ditch block: A defender threw himself in front of a goal-bound shot to protect the lead.

Tactical Story

Colwyn Bay set up with a controlling midfield and looked to progress the ball through the half-spaces rather than relying on long balls. Their patience was tested by Haverfordwest County’s disciplined 4-1-4-1 shape, which limited space between the lines and forced the hosts wide. The winning goal came from a rare moment when Haverfordwest failed to close down the edge of the box quickly enough.

Haverfordwest County will feel they defended well for long periods, but they lacked a consistent attacking threat. Their best opportunities came from set-pieces, and they never truly managed to stretch Colwyn Bay’s back line in open play. The visitors’ manager will likely be pleased with the organisation but frustrated by the lack of cutting edge.

Standout Players

Dylan Rees was the obvious match-winner for Colwyn Bay, but the team’s defensive unit deserves equal credit. The centre-backs dealt with aerial pressure throughout, while the goalkeeper produced a key save late on. For Haverfordwest County, the midfield screen worked tirelessly, and their left-sided defender produced several important interventions.

What the Result Means

Colwyn Bay’s 1-0 win strengthens their position in the Welsh Premier League standings and gives them a platform to build on. Haverfordwest County, meanwhile, will rue a missed opportunity to take at least a point on the road. In a league where margins are often slim, Colwyn Bay’s ability to win a tight game without conceding could prove valuable as the campaign develops.
